Hey Cashy, who was in charge when the M6 toll rd opened in 2003.
It wouldn't have been the Labour party would it?

Its a simple point, The revenue from Road Tax,plus the Tax on fuel, would easily solve the road repair problem, in case yeh aint noticed its 2012 now. Fool! it matters not who is in charge its wrong simple as? bit hard fer some to comprehend i know, but please try.

Just a pity that that option was taken in one of Labours 10 year plans marshaled by Two Jags, mind you when 10 year plans only lasted 18 months before they had a rethink its hardly surprising really, as usual just another thing left for the Tories to pick up the pieces and there are a hell of a lot of pieces to pick up

Not taking up on your point of who is in charge, Cashy, is going to be a problem no matter who is in power, due to the fact we all want cars now and overcrowding (as Jaysay mentioned), is our problem. It is us, the public, that are creating this problem. Just look down your street now and see how many houses have 2/3 cars. We are our own worst enemy, being lazy or snobby about public transport.
Ok, may generate more road tax,VAT from petrol sales, but this money does not go into a separate account. Goes direct into the Treasury pot and for the powers that be to decide which are the priorities. Some more than others.

for many years i also thought road tax was collected to pay for the repair etc of the road system but it turns out its collected to pay for everything infact most of it is probably spent repairing roads in other countries seen as our country likes to hand money over abroad hand over fist via EU membership and handouts to any other country that puts its gruppy paw out
god forbid money collected from british citizens be spent sorting out british problems
Not to worry though we have a MP who has sworn to vote in favour of a referendum to stop this happening twice on this forum so lets wait and see what happens...
oh wait theres been a vote to say if we get a referendum lets go see how our MP voted im sure with him knowing the feelings of the vast majority of his people that he will vote in favour of our demoratic right to a say on this matter.......
OOPS turns out he stabbed us in the back

The M6 toll road was commissioned in 1991.. that shows the timescale of any new proposals ... anyway this is just a red herring shoved in by Cameron to deflect from the NHS bill and any tax reduction for those earning over 150k anum.

Just wondering what are the alternatives, restricting car use maybe. Road maintenance has been neglected by every colour of government over the last 40 years. Maybe ring fencing the road tax could be a start, as only a fraction of what is raised through it is spent on what it should be
