A "win" in the sense that the NDP could lead a coalition govt., was a possibility. However, winning three times as many seats as they had in the previous parliament, including Ms. Brosseau and a 19 year old university student, and becoming for the first time the official opposition, and representing the "Quebec factor" in parliament is a victory of sorts. And without a doubt, ballsy Jack Layton, fighting prostrate cancer as he campaigned away, is by far the most popular political figure in Canada; and the one whom Canadians trust the most. There is a downright nasty side to our Conservatives, coming from the ultra-right tories in western Canada. Problem for the tories is that they won the election on the votes of slightly-right-of-centre voters in Ontario. If the tories come on too right wing, this vote will evaporate in the next election, going back to the Liberals or to the NDP. Sheesh, I hadn't realized Canadian politics was so complicated .
