Passing your driving test doesn't instantly make you a good driver. Being a good driver takes years of practise. When you pass your test you can drive almost any car from a little 500cc Fiat to a Ferarri if you had the money.

The Goverment should introduce the same licensing rules as they do with motorcycles. If you're 17 you can drive upto a 124cc machine get to 25 and take the full test you drive anything from 49cc scooter right up to a Suzuki Huyabusa.

Back on topic I have no problems with pensioners driving but as you get older your reactions get slower.

They should be tested after a certain age to see if they are in a fit state to drive.

My dad is profoundly deaf and was driving buses till 1985 he is still driving today.

I just think that calls for people to be tested or have their licences removed purely on age is not acceptable........you are right that good driving is about experience........and with experience comes the ability to drive within your limitations...you see potential hazards sooner and become a proactive driver rather than a reactive driver......this only comes with experience. Most of the people I know would hand in their licence of their own volition if they thought that they were no longer up to the task.

I would be one of them Marg, if I felt that I was becoming a danger driving due to whatever reason I would stop driving straight away.

I couldnt live with myself if I'd harm anyone which could have been avoided.

Ya I thought that Margaret, but nobody likes to admit they're no longer up to it, because they never think they are, I often think I'm still young and active, until reality kicks in, especially when I look at the bloke in the mirror every morning who I don't recognise

John......in respect of some things I know we all like to think we are young.......but if you find yourself making mistakes, or you begin to feel unsure or nervous about driving then you have to reassess your abilities.
There is an older guy in our street who drove very well until a few years ago.......he became scared of going out in his car, he said that the increase in the volume of traffic made him nervous, so he did what he thought was right, he sold it and gave up driving.

My next door neighbour is 79 and he still drives......he is competent and courteous, and has been driving all kinds of vehicle for almost 60 years.
I am sure he knows his capabilities and I have no doubt he would call it a day if he thought he was not safe to drive.

Re: Car In The Lodge Near Asda

Today I gave my car to my son for family use.
I passed my test at age 22, and at nearly 69 I thought it was time to call it a day.
In 46 years of driving I got two speeding tickets and one parking ticket.
I have done so little driving in the past three years that I have lost my confidence, and other road users just make driving a nerve wrecking experience that I can well do without.

The idiots that dont indicate, fly up to a junction so you dont think there gonna stop & smash into you. Taxi's just pull out on you, the list is endless, and its only gonna get worse. Well done you for all the years of safe driving

I think you can blame the second part on the first.
I drive quite a lot and yes there are idiots on the road but there has always been idiots on the road.

I saw a car pull from the slip road in front of a articulated wagon tonight while travelling a lot slower than the wagon. They only do 60 so its not hard to either accelerate above 60 before joining the motorway or pull in behind him. This was not a young driver but an older bloke by the way.

As I was on the roundabout getting onto the M65 a very expensive new large car was happily cutting across his lane into mine without a thought for me.

The world is full of idiots and you just have to be aware of the dangers and do your best to stay safe.

I agree there have always been road idiots - just now there are more drivers, and so more idiots, so that on every trip you see at least one.

Know a little how you feel.

Last month felt unsafe, for the first time ever. Never drove again, and sold my car, shortly after.

Was sad. Felt sorry for myself. Drove since I was seventeen. My bit of independence.

Couldn't have lived with myself, if I hurt anyone else, because of the Parkinson's. Fine if I drove myself into a wall.

Where the car was, now stands a fantastic bird house, bought with some of the car money.

Don't be sad.

Be happy you were strong enough to know you're own mind, and make the right decision...for you. x
