Re: Catching Mice
Cats can live 15 - 20 years and are expensive to feed, need yearly injections against cat flu and regular doses of flea repeller.
It is by far more economic to invest in a pest repeller.

In that case, Emzy, you might be pleasantly surprised at what a good and loving pet a cat can be. Trouble is, if you get a kitten, you've a 6 month wait before it's grown-up enough to catch mice. The Cats' Protection League (if you have a branch close to you) always has adult cats that need a good home, as does the RSPCA, but if you have a puppy you'd have to be assured the cat gets along with dogs - some do, some don't, it depends if they're used to them.
Whatever you decide, I do hope you get the mouse problem resolved soon. The hygiene issue must be very worrying for you with small children around and I know, from experience, how difficult it is to get rid of the little burgers.

Re: Catching Mice
I'm not really a cat person, dogs are more my cup of tea, but back in the late 70 when I lived in Hassy I had mice in my cottage, the cat who lived at the Coach and Horses had had kittens so I got one, never saw another mouse or any sign of one again

Re: Catching Mice
If you get a cat competent enough to solve your rodent problem (many aren't) remember that once the supply at home dries up, it will want to go outside and bring in birds and field rodents.

To be quite honest S25, I think when mice get the scent of a cat they exit stage left, when I got mine never even saw another dead or alive
