Re: Chivalry???

Well im always one to give up my seat on the bus. But it really REALLY annoys me when some of the 'older' people of the community 'purposely' put their bags on the seat next to them so you cant sit next to them! Especially when there is nowhere else to sit!

That really annoys me, but id always give up my seat, I dont mind standing.

Got to agree with you thomas, behave to others as you expect them to behave to you. If people want respect then they have to be prepared to give it too!

Re: Chivalry???

I havent given up..

I use the tube when in london and am amazed at the men sat down who dont move when pregnant, elderly or just women get on ... The off side is that if I was to get up then everyone would look at me stupid... But I couldnt just sit there... So now when I use the tube I usually stand anyways..

last year sometime I held a door open for a woman who stood back to let me through.. when she saw I was letting her through she said I was being plain awkward

Old people are the worse mannered people on this planet ..... I cant wait to be that old hehehe

Re: Chivalry???

Yeah, even though I think why do I do it at times, it doesnt change how im going to act. I will always be prepared to vacate my seat whether other people do or not. Doesnt bother me! Its actually one of the only things that doesnt change my actions. Usually I would of done the same as them, but to regain a polite, friendly enviroment in Hyndburn, some of us have to start somewhere!

I have old fasioned beliefs and values and I am proud of them. There will be a very small minority who dont appreciate them but in general they are accepted sometimes in suprise as they are fading fast. Being polite and helpful to others wether young or old makes me feel good in myself.

Seventeen years of catching the tube everyday, soon cured me of offering my seat to a woman on the tube, if I was lucky enough to get one.

At first, being a nicely brought up little chap, I did always offer my seat to someone elderly, or a pregnant lady. The torrent of abuse I very often suffered for this act of chivalry, soon made me stop doing this.

It's good to be back in the north, were you can walk on the kerbside of a woman, open doors for people and be thanked, all in the knowledge that it is appreciated, as I myself do if someone shows me an act of kindeness.

I do agree though that friends of either gender should pay their way equally at the pub.

Good manners cost nothing.

I do find in London that people are less caring of others, they barge into you without apologising, take up all the pavement yakking so that you have to walk in the road, and often are downright rude. I have found recently that I have been offered a seat on the tube - I must look older than I'd hoped! It struck me the other day, we have bus ticket machines in Central London with a sign that says "Buy tickets before boarding". A while back it would have said "PLEASE buy tickets before boarding". Sign of the times?

i dont think its just the young ones that are manner- less,as you say pendy people barging about and not saying sorry! what about the women with prams and super market trolleys they do my shed in! they stop on the narrowest aisles and pavements to have a chin wag, making people walk into the main road or having to go down another aisle
