Some threads are worth bumping and this is one of them.

I’ve emailed friends and relatives with a link to this thread and also to the petition and asked them to do the same.

Re: Codex Alimentarius

The proposed EU measures do seem extreme for the majority of food supplements and herbal remedies, but I would certainly welcome additional information regarding any potential side effects of of the ingredients.

Even if it's only a minor side effect it should be clearly marked on the container. For example I occassionally take Coenzyme Q10, which when I look on Google it says, "some patients have experienced a mild inability to sleep, liver enzymes levels have been elavated, rashes, nausea and upper abdominal pain. Others side effects reported include dizziness, irritability, headache, fatigue, heartburn and visual sensitivity to light.

Any prescription drug would be required to list these side effects, so why not food supplements.

Re: Codex Alimentarius

I have to agree that the supplements should have a list of side affects, i got a very interesting one from the supplement i am taking, i asked at the chemist and it wasnt listed in their medication book as a supplement,i ended up posting it on a mummies forum and they all said they had had the same thing......scared the hell outta me!

Re: Codex Alimentarius

Too much of anything has side effects.
Too many carrots turns skin orange.
Some food supplements taken to excess will cause side effects.
Some people irresponsibly assume that anything 'natural' is harmless, so they take more than the dose recommended on the bottle. That is asking for trouble.

The problem that has caused WHO/UN intervention is the poor manufacturing practices in some countries (India and China especially) which contaminate the supplement with toxins.

If you buy supplements manufactured in Western countries you will not have that toxin problem. Too many people are buying cheaper food supplements on the web from those dodgy sources.

By imposing regulation on all manufacturers, the price will rise dramatically because extensive drug type trials will have to be done before a supplement can be marketed. This is why the multinational drug companies will take over the market. They can afford those costs.

By adding the regulation that only a doc can prescribe them, will in effect make them inaccessible to the people who do use them responsibly and those that don't.

The side effects reported during the tests on Coenzyme Q10 were on quite high doses. However, I only take the recommended dose (30mg one a day) and find that the mild inability to sleep, that some patients reported during the tests, added to my present high stress levels, was not a good combination.

The only advice on the packaging tends to be the same on all food supplements anyway "if you are taking medication, please consult your doctor or pharmacist before use".

Wise words, but I thought the whole point was that we didn't want to spend time in doctor's surgeries.

Re: Codex Alimentarius

Absolutely true Margaret. There was an item in the news not long ago about someone who died from drinking too much water. You can overdose on eggs but it would be ludicrous to have to get those on prescription wouldn't it? If people cannot buy these supplements from legitimate sources in future it will lead to a black market and probably more of the contaminated products being circulated. It's the sledgehammers and nuts syndrome again.

Re: Codex Alimentarius

I use a number of food supplements.......I take the responsibility for checking on the side effects myself......I make sure that I follow the manufacturers instructions, and I do not believe that I should be stopped from taking care of myself.
I do not want to have to see a medical practitioner to get Glucosamine and chondoitin......I'm happy to pay for my supplements.
Taking these has enabled me to reduce my dosage of anti-inflammatories(themselves, not without some risk and side effects) to just occasional use.

Good news
BBC NEWS | Health | Vitamin 'may prevent memory loss'
This is the vitamin that has revived me. It looks like the benefits of taking it are beginning to be recognised.
