Cornershops
What would we do without them.Fancy a drink but can't afford the pub,run out of bread/eggs/milk before the weekly shop at Asda, fag supply running low,new washing line in a hurry, lottery, bills to pay but can't be bothered to queue at the bank & whats a £1.50 charge at the ATM if your drawing out a weeks money but don't have to go into town. And its all on your doorstep.Okay it does become a hang out place for the local youth after dark but hey! go during the day.Maybe a bit more expensive but if needs must.......wonderful places, lets have more.Do you agree or do you think they're sometimes just too convenient....i.e drink

Re: Cornershops
Could not do without em....I have 2 shops within 5 mins walk that are 24hrs.. and they both sell alcohol 24hrs ... but never seen any problems with gangs or kids, thing is "kids" arent interested in getting drunk at 4am .. it's a myth.

Re: Cornershops
Goes to show how times change.. years ago (I do mean years) one Sunday night I called into a shop that was near the top of Omerod st and asked for a tin of tomato soup.. the owner said he could not sell it because it was "non perishable" goods and against the law!.. he did sell it to me in the end.. was he taking the **** or was that the law at the time?

Re: Cornershops
Yes, I think was the law at the time. I think corner shops are vital but sadly we've lost far too many of them. There used to be some really good ones up here.

Re: Cornershops
Our corner shop was bought by the Co-op, about 10 years ago, and became a supermarket style Late Shop. It also now has a Post Office on the premises. It's convenient but it's not a patch on what it was before when, as well as selling the usual items, it was also a deli and sold lovely fresh cooked meat and fresh cheeses. You also had the personal service from the owners. If you wanted something that Gerry didn't have in stock he would order it for you, unlike now when you get, "We don't stock it, there's no demand for it".
Long live the good, old-fashioned corner shop.

Re: Cornershops
Corner shops also have their uses in the community - if they know someone who goes in there every day for milk or bread etc and they dont see them for a day or two then if they are part of the community they might ask someone if theyd seen such abody because they havent been in for a day or two or go and knock on their door.

Corner shops are great, there's 3 near me but must admit, now its only a five minute walk to Tesco I tend to go there, fresher bread etc.

Re: Cornershops
I got a Christmas present of the guys in my corner shop, even though they are Muslim.
I'd be lost without them.
