Yup, I stand corrected, as you say it's a totally different organisation than the one provided in my link, that'll teach me to jump in with both feet against you without checking thoroughly *slinks off to lick wounds*

Got it in the end Guiness -that's the main thing
The use of your word detective Jay reminded me that Inspector Morse was also an Oxford Union member -it features in one of the episodes (Greeks bearing Gifts) where he goes to a debate.
A few interesting facts about the Oxford Union:
5 PM's have been in office there -Gladstone, Salisbury, Asquith, MacMillan and Heath.
The Queen attended a debate in 1968
It's first woman president was elected in 1968, Benazir Bhutto became it's most well-known female president. In 1986 all 3 offices (President, Librarian and Treasurer) were occupied by women for the first time.
The most controversial debate ever was held in 1933 when the motion was: "This house will in no circumstances fight for it's King and Country"
It was passed 275 votes to 153! So strangely enough the pacifists won...
If you're interested Guiness there was a thread on the Bullingdon Club a while back on Accyweb (my post in number 19!):

Re: Could Boris be the next Prime Minister?
I've been a little busy today and therefore not had the time to read the many posts on this matter, so excuse me if I am repeating what may have already been said. I am about as far removed from being a Tory as it's possible to be but I have to say that I like Boris the Buffoon. I think he shows that rare thing, humanity in politics. He also does something that not many politicians do, he makes me smile. However there are a number of reasons why he will not be the next prime minister. One of the main reasons is that he would have to become a member of parliament and to do that he would have to contest a bi-election in the next couple of years. This would presumably need to be a safe seat for the Tories. He would, of course, have then have to resign as mayor of London. He would then need to stand for election as the leader of the party (and of course win). The problem with this scenario, as Boris and everyone around him would know, is that he would lose an incredible amount of credibility and be seen as a self-seeking individual who is only thinking about himself. Now this probably describes most politicians but not, I think, our Boris. He would also be seen as abandoning his post and the people of London who voted for him for pure selfish gain. He also said himself that his recent "hanging in the air stunt" probably killed off his chances anyway. He is, I fear, more astute than most people give him credit for. There is also the small matter of the possible slaughter at the poles if the current "government" (I use the term loosely) carries on in its austerity-at-all-costs approach to the economy.
I believe Boris is best left to his post in London (I wouldn't want him let loose on the nation anyway - I said I liked him, not that I thought he was a good politician) and I'm sure that is probably where he sees himself anyway. I don't even believe that the olympics will stand him in any stead for any length of time, like most things it will be forgotten in a few short months.

Re: Could Boris be the next Prime Minister?
Nice thoughtful post Houseboy from a new member of Accyweb. Could I ask please if you post such a long message in future that you divide it up into paragraphs as it makes it a lot easier to read.
Thanks

John, I'm not having a go, it was a polite request, and I honestly found it difficult to read. I wanted to read it as he obviously had something interesting to say, with some people's posts I wouldn't have bothered.
I was only trying to point him in the right direction, but if you think I was having a go then that's up to you. Sometimes I can't do right for doing wrong, I shan't bother in future.

Re: Could Boris be the next Prime Minister?
Just because I am new to this forum doesn't mean I am new to every forum and to writing in general. I am sorry that you found my post hard to read, I will try to make it easier for you next time, but there is actually nothing wrong gramatically or literally with the post. If you have an issue with the content I am quite happy to discuss but please don't criticise me for writing in a way that does not please you. If I were to take issue with everyone who wasn't totally accurate on every forum I have participated on then nothing would ever get said.
Incidentally (new paragraph, and correctly so,) part of my job for the last 23 years or so has been to edit articles (and indeed write them) for various magazines. I have been involved in publishing for longer than I care to remember and frankly to join a new forum and be criticised for my ability to write is not a good introduction.
