Could have been written about the Coppice

I was listening to a song on the radio yesterday. It just happened to be on and the words struck me as describing how many of us here feel about the Coppice.

Here are the words which I thought were particularly relevant:

This used to be my playground [used to be]
This used to be our pride and joy
This used to be the place we ran to
That no one in the world could dare destroy

This used to be our playground [used to be]
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
I wish you were standing here with me

This used to be our playground [used to be]
This used to be our great escape
This used to be the place we ran to
This used to be our secret hiding place

This used to be our playground [used to be]
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
The best things in life are always free

I don't know if it would impress anyone else the same way but the Coppice used to be my playground. It was once the pride and joy of Accy. It was the place to run to to escape from the hustle and bustle of the town and to find secret hiding places and best of all yes - it was free and we didn't think anyone would ever dare destroy it. Of course all that was before the trees were planted and before the A56 sliced through the back of it.

The song of course is "This used to be my playground" by Madonna

Re: Could have been written about the Coppice

That’s nice willow and very expressive of many childhood memories. I don't mind the road so much, but the conifers disturb me. I don’t recall ever seeing so many bloody conifers in Accrington before. They are shallow rooted and will in time rip up the ground and bu**er up the landscape even more. My opinion. The coppice is still free willow, and always will be. It was a gift to the town, the people of Accrington; maybe some have forgotten that fact?

if enough people bike over the top of it then it may end up flat sooner than what the artist expected

it will last 500 years my arse we can have it levelled in 3 if we all go biking up there and get fit in the process

A few all-terrain vehicles should help with the job too. Can I come and join you?

Ah, Willow you old romantic! I`ve got a few pictures on the top of the Coppice with an old flame of mine in the snow with our two dogs and when i`m up there I often think back to those times, 20 years ago. This is what the Panopticon people don`t understand, it`s art verses memories. when you go up there are no signs saying Property of LCC/ HBC, Keep off the grass, trespassers will be prosecuted. It`s yours and you can go where you please to dream your dreams.

Well said Uncle Mick, there's little else that can be said.

The Panopticon is not "Art", it is landscaping. There is a significant difference.

It's moorland that was donated to the towns people if I remember correctly.
