Dinosaurs in the Bible
I am just listening to one of my favourie comedians. The late Bill Hicks. In it there are two tracks Dinosaurs in he Bible and Living God in which he pokes fun at God/Jesus/Religion.
Should Bill Hicks be banned for being offensive to religion? Or should we just chastise and denegrate him for being offensive? Is he a christianaphobe who pedals prejudice against Christians. You can see where this is going. If not, and society decrees not, ... then should all religions not be bound by the same principle?
What's the difference between Bill Hicks attacks on religion and e.g. The Danish cartoons. I was always brought up to believe the Voltaire maxim, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Or, should we just berate you for trying to stir it?

Well I hope not.
Some issues just seem to be heading to 'off limits'. As an aethiest it troubles me. It's not just religion where intolerance ocurrs.
I know the vast majority of Brits are tolerant but there seems an increase in 'purists' in all walks of life who hog radio shows and other media and whose lexicon seems to be based around 'outrage' or 'offended'.

Re: Dinosaurs in the Bible
Without knowing exactly what is in those two comedy items I don't know if I would be offended or not. If I was offended I would probably complain but in a dignified way.

He is quite derogatory at times but very inteligent. Obviously his reference points include Christian Fundamentalists. He basicallly goes for Bush, Republicans, neo-cons, anti-liberals, corporate america, US TV, hypocrites ....

Sounds like a one note Samba to me. But as long as he isn't slamming Islam, everything will be hunky-dory.

Re: Dinosaurs in the Bible
I don't think anything, humour wise, should be off limits.
I've been to live comedy shows, and have occasionally been offended.
I heckled my point of view.
He spluttered a mealy mouthed appology.
I won.
Humour has always been constructed from the darker side of life. Its a coping mechanism.
Think of all the sick jokes that appear hours after some terrible disaster.
Besides it is almost impossible to police, and that is what censorship is, the thought police, policing our thoughts.
I've been Rindy Roo.
You've been a great audience.
(Exits before people think I'm the warm up man for the real Michael.)
