Disapointment at Springhill
I was asked by a email friend who emigrated to Australia if I could go to Springhill and take some photos of all the changes, and as my uncle lived in Elizabeth St and I spent a lot of time there, learning to ride a bike around the roundabout opposite Springhill club, fished in the mill lodge and then served an apprenticeship as a turner, at Lang Bridge so I had a lot of intrest in doing this. What a disapointment how the area is run down, all the once fine terraced houses looked after with very proud owners windows boarded up streets dirty.I took the pictures and will send them off.
The new apartments look good but I expect the rents will be high
P S She asked me to photo Springhill School, knew were it was, could not find it

Re: Disapointment at Springhill
School went a while ago im afraid, and whilst i wholeheartedly agree about how run down the area has become it has but so has almost every other part of accy woodnook india st area, all bedraggled, and the memories of old haunts that have been regenerated, and youd expect it to be for the better but i dont think any modifications made to this town have really benefitted it, accy market as it was used to generate a great atmosphere and that to me is what makes a great market, not the bricks and motar..sorry if i seem to be a little negative about my once beloved home town, but im only saying what i see, sometimes its hard to smile and i cant really say im proud to be from accy anymore, sad but true.

Re: Disapointment at Springhill
I grew up on Elizabeth street as well, what years are you talking about?
It is a shame to see how Its ended up though, I had such good memories of how everyone knew each other and all the kids played together.

Re: Disapointment at Springhill
Springhill school was demolished and the school was rebuilt, it is still on exchange street but at the junction with fairfield street.
could I suggest downloading google earth
Google Earth: Download Google Earth for PC, Mac, or Linux
it will let you look at the area from close up satelite images, and if you go into street view you can tour the steets as if you are walking around

Very sad but true, I feel the same. I don'tcome to Accy very often now but when I do I end up feeling quite depressed. The only bit that lifts my spirits is its surroundings and let them dare try to regenerate that!
Just about to post about the market on another thread when I've got my thoughts together.
