Re: Do the Scots REALLY want Independance?
I wonder what will happen with Scots living in the UK and Brits living in Scotland if they get independance. As foreigners, will they be entitled to benefits and the NHS etc?

That's one reason for ID cards and you having to prove your right to be here instead of the authorities having to prove your shouldn't be here. It's backwards at the moment.

Re: Do the Scots REALLY want Independance?
No...I would not be in favour of an ID card.
We have national insurance numbers.....NHS numbers, these should be enough to prove that you are entitled to benefits(if you are) and NHS treatment(if you are).
If you have neither of these things then you are entitled to neither of the benefits.
When it was first mooted that we would be legally obliged to carry an ID card(and that we would be required to pay for it) I said that I would never have one......the tax man has never had a problem in finding me to pay my dues - they do not require me to prove my identity...they know who I am.
If an ID card were to be used - then there are crooks out there who would set up,a fine business in faking them for those who do not have them, but need them.

Re: Do the Scots REALLY want Independance?
The Scots don't want independence ... what they need is to brush up (pi) on their curling skills

Re: Do the Scots REALLY want Independance?
The British Government said that Scotland could end up as a 'Third World country' if they vote for independence......I'm not sure things will improve to that extent

I'm not sure if the commonwealth games held in Glasgow will boost the no vote or damage it?

Re: Do the Scots REALLY want Independance?
Well, it looks like our poll was badly out. The polls show the expected vote is getting more and more balanced, could well be a yes.
Personally I would prefer a no vote. For selfish reasons- a yes means major disruption to industry, banking, the civil service, government. A lot of politicians, civil servants, industry bosses will have far too much of their time taken up sorting out the mess when they should be concentrating on getting the UK back on its feet.
I think the No campaigners have made a poor showing, Alistair Darling was pathetic on the last debate, Salmon, a man I'd never trust, has been allowed to get away with murder.
So, how do you think it will go?

Re: Do the Scots REALLY want Independance?
Reckon it could well be a "yes" vote, now the momentum is swinging that way. If it is, I think the Jocks may find that an independent Scotland is not quite the wonderful socialist paradise they'd envisioned, especially when they have to pay for it. Be careful what you wish for!

Re: Do the Scots REALLY want Independance?
I'm crossing my fingers for a larger turnout than the 63% of the population which voted last time. The last referendum saw the Yes vote win 52% to 48% but the result didn't count as a condition of the referendum was that 40% of the total electorate should vote in favour in order to make it valid.
I don't think there's any constraints on this referendum, excepting that you have to have reached puberty.

What! 40% of the Scottish electorate are able to read the ballot
If they do vote "yes", would it be possible to persuade Yorkshire to join them?
An aside: at the time of the first Quebec referendum on independence, I was in Saskatoon wearing a t-shirt on which was printed: "If Quebec separates, make them take Toronto."
Hey, maybe an independent Scotland would take Justin Bieber ... that would assure the support of all Canadians.

pitty we dont have that rule for local and general elections
the way i see it though is that if you cant be arsed to turn out to vote its tough titties as the saying goes and if tehir lazyness leads to them getting something they didnt want then theres no one to blame but themselves and those that did bother to turn out shouldnt be penalized
