Re: Do they still teach Geography ?
The magistrates accepted that he didn't know Accy is in Lancashire. They must be very gullible for believing that excuse.

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?
I work in Warrington. A woman I used to work with once asked me, when I said my mother lived in Blackburn, if that was in Yorkshire. It's only 40 miles away for gawd's sake.

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?
I believe its down to bad teaching. I work with a guy who does a lot of hill walking and he was suprised I could read a map evn to an 8 point grid referance as well as understand the markings and symbols on it. Something I am happy to know as sat nav need batteries.

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?
I can also read a map and it annoys me when people say women can't read maps. I know what all the little symbols mean too. I'm not daft enough to think I can drive up a river like a friend of ours was going to do until he realised it was a river!

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?
To answer the question 'do they still teach geography in schools?'
Sort of. In Primary schools they teach it on a rota basis, every other term, alternating with History. And they dont learn about maps anymore, they do a short spell of it for a few weeks, and then its all about what the world looks like these days and hows its changing. A survey was done with high school kids and they didn't know where Ireland was or even where the cities where in the uk!!
They are all going to get lost as soon as they leave home.

Re: Do they still teach Geography ?
You've got to admit that if you say Hyndburn to someone outside of the area they don't know where it is.
I bet most of us, when asked, will say Accy/Ossy/Harwood/Clayton etc.
