Does TV Rule Your Life?
I asked my other half the other day why he watches a lot of TV programmes like Soaps, Jeremy Kyle type programmes, war programmes and things like the Simpsons. He says he watches (what I would only term as trash) because they are on and there is nothing better to do. This made me wonder how many other people watch TV for the same reason. Am I one of the few that actually watches a programme because I am interested in it and when the programme has ended I will go and do something else. Personally I've always thought TV has too much of a hold on people and never allowed it to be on during the day except for Saturdays sport. I would much rather have the radio on or listen to music than sit watching a box in the corner.

I wonder if it is a 'Man' thing......my husband also watches rubbish like Jeremy Kyle, Judge Judy, and those hideous cackling witches that are on in the middle of the day(loose women)......he also watches violent films that are peppered with guts, gore and the inevitable bad language.....and then he wonders why I take myself off to bed with a novel.......to be honest, I'd rather eat my own eyeballs that watch this cr@p.

Re: Does TV Rule Your Life?
It is in our house........himself hugs the remote control like his life depends on it.
Sometimes he will go to sleep while watching one of these 'riveting' programs.......I will sneakily slide the remote from his grasp, change channels and he will open his eyes and say 'Oi, I was watching that'......yeah course you were......Channel 5 now project onto the back of your eyelids do they?

Sorry Ladies its not a man thing, I'd rather slit my wrists than watch Jeremy Kyle, Judge Judy, The Simpsons and the like. I watch a lot of TV, but find myself watching things like National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet, but do watch a lot of Movies on Sky and things like Gold and Hallmark too

Re: Does TV Rule Your Life?
I'm curious now as to how many people watch the soaps and reality programmes. I always thought it was a lot seeing as how they always seem to be on. Give me Animal Planet anyday. Do you think it's time they put this on Freeview?

Re: Does TV Rule Your Life?
tv doesnt rule my life, it is on cbeebies during the day for the boys but its very rare they actually sit down and watch it, its more a backgroundthing while they play. I dont go out of my way to watch soaps etc, will watch them if theres nothing else on i want to watch but more often than not i do not sit infront of the telly until 9pm, which is when more often than not i can find CSI or similar on somewhere would sat that that is really the only think i would go out of my way to watch, especially the new series have a reminder set for that lol but other than that I wouldnt say that I watch much. I dont really have much time for TV

Re: Does TV Rule Your Life?
I'm not a great TV fan......though there are some series that I have liked.....Judge John Deed was one of those.........and there is another one called Stone Cold......starring Tom Sellek(SP)....he of the Magnum PI fame......but much more mature now and strangely more believable.
I don't watch the reality shows at all.......I find them irritating....(like an itch you can't scratch)......hubby watches those avidly too.

Re: Does TV Rule Your Life?
There is a lot of light hearted rubbish, and I watch my fair share. Although I'd defend Big Brother as a social experiment, and rate Corrie as the best serial fiction since Dickens. Although I can't really justify watching Jeremy Kyle, except after watching it your own life suddenly seems a whole lot better.
Television does allow you to visualise things and places that you'd probably never expeience. I recently saw a documentary about India's Hospital Train, which was fascinating.
BBC - BBC Four Programmes - India's Hospital Train
The most moving programme I ever watched, and which will stay with me for the rest of my life, was a film about children orphaned by AIDS in China. I was moved to tears.
The Blood of Yingzhou District - Helping AIDS Orphans – Film maker targets stigma
There's good and bad television, much like everything else, from food to books.
Sometimes you fancy haute cuisine, other times only a chip butty will give you the satisfaction you need.
It's all about making the right choice.

Re: Does TV Rule Your Life?
when mum was alive the telly went on at 5.35pm for neighbours and then it was home and away at 6, then 7pm was emmerdale, 7.30 corrie street or eastenders, then whatever.
Now i hardly have the telly on .. the only time its on is for NCIS, either on fx or channel 5, might be numbers if channel 5 was on and csi new york .. dont like any of the other csi ones. Have watched britains got talent and like im a celeb, but not big brother or any of the others, jeremy kyle ..who's he, judge judy a couple of times but not recent. Im normally sitting in front of this at night anyway talking to spuggie on msn ... though i sometimes have the telly on in the background .. just like he does.
