Dream job

I'm possibly in my favourite ever job right now but in dream world what I'd absolutely love to do is open a restaurant in Skiathos. The group of us that go there quite often have all discussed (knowing it would never happen) how we'd do it. Chris would be the breakfast Chef and everyone else had a role, from Chef to designing the menu boards every day - my role was front of house. I'd be that nutter running up and down the harbour encouraging people to come in then I'd take over behind the bar mixing cocktails.

So what's your dream job?

My dream job abroad would be the nutter 'police' to stop people like you running up and down trying to get us into your bar! He He! Seriously though
we would run a mile if you came running after us and never freqeunt your bar again!
When we go abroad we want to relax and somebody chasing us up and down the street really dosen't do it for us! I wish you all the best though in whatever you decide to do! Locks.

It's funny, isn't it. Everyone thinks they can run a restaurant or a pub. But they don't seem to realise that it is bloody hard work for very little money and less thanks.

A case in point, before we opened up the business in Blackpool, we operated a fast food takeaway in Burnley. When it came time to sell it, we spent a few days with the new owner showing her how we ran the business, where we got all the best supplies deals from etc. etc. It was clear from the first day that she was not listening to a word we said. She knew it all, even though she had never run her own business before and her only experience of catering was working in a hospital kitchen. So, having transferred a business which it took us eight years to build up, which was supporting itself, paying two reasonable wages and also allowed savings to be built up, we drew a line under it. We gave her our phone number in case she had any problems, wished her luck and left her to get on with it.

Six months later we happened to be in Burnley to visit one of our suppliers and so we decided to pop in on the old business to see how the new owner was getting on. She had gone bust. The business had failed, she had lost everything she had put into it and still had another four and a half years of a loan to pay off and a ten year lease to service..and a new job to find.

Dreams are all very well, but they are nothing unless they are backed up with experience, determination, resourcefulness, passion....and lots of hard cash! And even then, success is not a racing certainty. That is just here in the UK, where you know the language and the rules. Setting up abroad is much more difficult, by several orders of magnitude.

Id love to be an Airline pilot, visiting all those wonderfull places for free and getting paid for it ..hehehe.

Ah, but the difference here is that I have run pubs before so I DO know how hard the work is - that's why I'm working for an arts organisation and not running a restaurant in Skiathos. If I thought for one minute that my 'dream' job would actually be a doddle I'd be out there like a shot but that's why I only use it as my 'dream' and not my reality.

Loosen up A-B and have a dream. Surely there's something else in life that you think might be fun other than baking delicious delicacies!

Oh, believe me, I have dreams and ambitions enough to fill the pages of several books, sadly though none of which would pay the rent. And I am as relaxed as anyone viewing the rapid approach of their 50th birthday can be.

I always fancied running an Old Fashoined Tea Rooms......you know the kind of thing......gingham table cloths......home made quiches with fresh salad...scones with Jam and cream.....real tea in a lovely pot with a tea strainer......afternoon teas...sandwiches with the crusts cut off.....delicate iced fancies. Lemon Meringue pie - home made of course. All served by ladies of a certain age in black dresses with frilly caps and frilly pinnies.

Managing an English chippy in Santa Monica, LA. I personally wouldn't like to actually work in it, that's why i said managing. But i suppose i could pop in for an odd hour here and there, in between spending time on the beach and shopping.

IN My dream job I would earn enough money to be able to run a formula 1 stock car competitively. Wouldn't matter what the job was as long as I had enough time to machanic the car and spend my weekends racing. But seeing as I have not had my 1st driving lesson yet......

She could have rung you to ask advice at any time though A B but didn't, did that not ever so slightly **** you off, cos it would me, esp when she was about to go bust. You only get as much out of a business as you put in. When I can put in, I'll start my electrical business back up, Instead of doing odds n sods for people. I'm turning more and more work away each week, and I hate it cos I know they'll never ring again, even if i can do the work in the future.
