Shall we sack the lot of them and join with BwD, that way we may get some action. Or shall we say HBC get off your a** and get things moving.

Well after "thirty years of service to the community" the pitiful results of which lie all around us. I think that there is some merit in your suggestions; after all, it couldn't possibly be any worse....or could it?

Re: Dreaming of Pennine Lancashire
Hmm.. Very interesting thread this, with a general consensus that "something" needs doing without the animosity the Panoptican project built up. So, jusy a few thoughts
I thought the reason that The Commercial could`nt be developed was due to the close proximity to Blythes and the problems a chemical leak could cause.
A scheme like this would need dynamic leadership within the partnership...can you see that coming from HBC, with apologies to Graham Jones!
I posted a previous thread regarding a cycle route through Hyndburn the ideas behind which fit in with this scheme, but got very few posts. It was open to debate, so was it due to apathy?
I`m all for being bundled together with the Ribble Valley.. It`s a beautiful place

Re: Dreaming of Pennine Lancashire
I have nothing against the Ribble Valley Blackburn or Burnley but I believe Hyndburn should forge its own identity in the county and one to be proud of. The apathy could be because people have heard plenty of plans that have come to nothing so when some does appear its the "yeh right as if it will happen" attitude that prevails.

If you go back a few posts’s I made the point about people continuing to moaning about the system and propagating apathy. The point I feel that people are missing is that Hyndburn already has an Identity and a proud heritage, what’s needed now is for those who have the drive and passion to stand up and be counted to make the views and thoughts of people know to their council leaders on mass.

Who has the right qualities and of the right calibre to take this on. It would be a task and a half just to get on a level road before trying to win the Accy public over.

Why does it have to be an individual, why not a collective of like minded people who are resident in the borough and are prepared to spend a little time to put together a constructive argument and the use the media to express those concerns to the council leadership, local business interests and the people? Even if nothing comes of it HBC and its leadership will have been put on notice that time is running out…..

Re: Dreaming of Pennine Lancashire
If such a group were to be organised somebody would have to lead it or at the very least start it off. It isn't going to materialise of its own accord - and look what happens when anybody suggests the awful word "committee".

If they don’t like the word Willow they can always change it to something appropriate for the task. I’m not suggesting that the people of Hyndburn start a revolution. I am suggesting that like minded people raise a voice and utilises the media to motivate Business, Local Interest Groups, Pressure Groups that might be active but to small the be taken seriously and any other group or person who cares with a degree of passion to stop the decline of this tremendous town.
Getting started can be as simple as getting Gayle and Katex to come up with short play to get local interest going in there area and then hitting the road to Accy. There is evidence that this could work. Graham Jones’s recent experience shows that the council is a little tender round the region of media, If a few off the cuff comments can cause concern, what could you do if those critiques where organised and extensive.

Quite correct. Blythes as achemical plant, and the safety of the area around, ha sbuggered up many a regen idea for what could be a alovely development if it was not what it is.

Can we shift it?
Does Tony Wilson know about it?
I know when I worked in Church at the old TSB donkeys ages ago there wasn't half a pong wafted over from Blythes when the wind was in the right (wrong) direction.

Forgive me Graham but is there not a new residential development not 200 yards away, other side of the lights there? I don’t understand why the development of the Commercial area should be restrained by Blyths. It’s not pretty when you get over the bridge there but tell me an industrial site over there that is. I remember this area when it was dark, dank and stained by previous chemical Leaks and the odd explosion. Its was a thriving community with a shop and a pub on almost every corner.

I seem to remember that it ponged irrespective of which ever direction the wind was blowing. I hate to tell you this but there’s a very definite smell between church and the Hapton side of Burnley, I can smell it every time I come home, in fact I look forward to smelling it.

when i lived in church i used to curse blythes for the pong for years,UNTIL 1977 when i got a job there! i then soon realised the pong that used to descend on church and also into our mess cabins came from ASHWORTHS bone yard, also on bridge street.

Re: Dreaming of Pennine Lancashire
Oh no, the boneyard was a different smell entirely!
In fact if anything I think it was probably worse than the pong from Blythes!
