Re: Drivers and common sense
Come on mate you drive for a living. Stopping is not always simple going down hill in the snow. Yes if he could have stopped he should have.
I think you have all missed 1 point. He was a taxi driver so he thinks he owns the road. That is why he did not stop - he was a taxi driver.

Re: Drivers and common sense
Common sense is that you always give way in snow to vehicles comming down hill to protect you and you vehicle, you don't know if they're going to skid. I've been there done it, a sharp corner going down hill, I didn't even brake, it was all over the place, sheet ice I had to let it hit the kerb to stop. had hell of a job getting it back off too, but if your going down hill you should stop if you can,

I wasn't there, - but I understand that the Taxi driver DID have the opportunity and time to stop, but chose not to.

Re: Drivers and common sense
Well if thats true that will be because he's a taxi driver, they're not used to stopping unless its to pick up or drop off. My cousin owns a taxi, as well as working for us running up to scotland and his temper is going to cost him his licenec if he isn't carefull. If someone cuts you you up, you swear curse, and put it down to experience but oh no, not him, he has to swerve at them and try to cut them up back. Absolutely pathetic way to behave on a road. I shall have no sympathy if he does lose his licence.

Re: Drivers and common sense
The rule is that you give way to traffic coming uphill. Simple. It's the law, apart from anything else.

Re: Drivers and common sense
Yes but you should err on the side of caution in snow in case they can't stop. vehicles do skid on snow and ice. The law says he/she should give way to traffic coming up if he/she can, at also doesn't say that you should go before you know that they're stopping. Common sense which kicks in to most driver automatically, I hope. I'm not saying thats what happened above, I'm saying that Although the highway code says it, sometimes common sense tells you not to do it that way. The highway code says you should always pass off side to offside if your turning right and the car facing is turning right, but doing that is rarely possible or practical, esp if it's a bus and a car lol

Commen sense or road rage? Road rage will always win in 8/10 cases.

Re: Drivers and common sense
well yous are all moaning about who should stop on a hill when there is abit of snow down. How many can say they give way to a truck. I,ve lost count how many times i,ve strugled to get going again on a hill because someone won't giveway because they are faster.

Re: Drivers and common sense
I've seen drivers of numerous large vehicles struggling because drivers of smaller quicker vehicles don't think.
This driver coming down, the one I was talking about, had space at the side of him where he could ahve safely pulled in. The row in Willows Lane is a long one and we were near the top coming up and NO spaces where we could have pilled in short of reversing all the way back down to the bottom again. Nobody can convince me that doing so wou;d have been the safer and more practical option of the two. He had nothing to hit. We had dozens of things we could have slid into the side of!
Oh, and whilst we're talking of Highway Code versus common sense what about the people who have been 'done' for crossing the stop line at a red light in order to allow an ambulance through flashing its lights and nee-nawing? Common sense would seem to indicate that getting out of the way to let the ambulance through takes priority but police, AA and RAC all say it's a No-No

Re: Drivers and common sense
I had a chuckle yesterday when driving up Willows Lane, (in my car, not a bus) The bottom of Willows Lane is now and for the next 6 weeks one-way as roadworks take over 50% of the road and diversion signs are in place.
A "lady driver" had decided that the signs were not meant for her so tried to squeeze herself past several cars going in the opposite direction. I tried to indicate to her when she was level with me that to continue was a "no-no" - but if looks could kill, I would be dead and buried!
Now THAT is an ignorant driver!
