Re: Driving at 101, Safe or not?
A company that I used to work for about 15 years ago employed a sales rep who was 72 at the time. He used to drive around his territory - Birmingham area - in second gear all the time. He never once went into third. He had never passed a driving test in his life because he started driving whilst in the army and it wasn't necessary. He could never understand why his gearbox needed replacing every six months.
He clearly wasn't a competant driver in some respects because he didn't have clue about how to drive a car, yet he never had an accident.
I'm not sure what my point is but I think there might be one in there somewhere.

Re: Driving at 101, Safe or not?
The point is he never had an accident, he was an experienced driver albeit a little cautious, but I think the key word here is experience which is something that no amount of money can buy.

Re: Driving at 101, Safe or not?
Right then folks here goes....
Driving license not issued for 50 years but only until holder reaches 70 years of age
Male of 101 years of age fully mobile and alert able to control a motor vehicle in a safe manner any problems there? (Told that he looked more like an 80yo) When he started to drive test and license NOT required but think he'll have to have a medical every year from 70.
Male 18 in Army, fully Mobile and alert passes his Driver training (Car and LGV with Hazmat and off-road) and can now handle a motor vehicle in a safe and controlled manner has his own car and could be branded as a BOY RACER but (as far as I'm aware) he doesn't do that (well said johnboy by the way) and he to has to drive on the motorway
Male 49 fully mobile and alert (has to have medical checks every 3 years for his PCV) works on Emergency Ambulance and has to drive at speed above the speed limit (but within reason and safe for other road users) Been driving for 30 years and can drive any of the following Mopeds, Motorbikes, Cars Car with trailer, Small Lorries + trailers, Single Deckers, Double Deckers, Coaches, Mini-buses Ambulances etc. Urban roads, country roads, motorway etc
Which one of the above is the BETTER driver??????????????
Chav please keep using the push-pull as you'll find it does help to keep the vehicle in control
ANSWER:-
ANY!!!! it all depends on how they handle to situation that is at hand be it traffic (volume, speed), the weather, the road conditions etc and so long as that gent is able to drive in a safe and controlled manner then power to him.

How is he supposed to change his CD while drinking a can of pop, steering around a bend changing down gear and indicating without spilling his packet of crisp all over the floor if he has to steer with 2 hands?

Re: Driving at 101, Safe or not?
I think we must all have a screw loose or we wouldn't be driving in the first place, putting our lives at risk day in day out on the roads, but it is good fun. By the way Bernard the medical is every 5 years from the age of 45 for PCV renewal.

No Chav, you are supposed to change gear BEFORE you go round corners!

Re: Driving at 101, Safe or not?
My late Uncle never passed a test because they didn't have them in the days when he learned to drive.
A friend in Southern Ireland has never passed a test for the same reason. Driving tests were introduced much later there than here.
I have passed a test and have a current licence but I have problems with my eyes which make driving dangerous, yet legally I would be classified as fit because my refocussing problem isn't tested. I can see a number plate at the required distance if I don't look at something close-up first but if I am in a car and look at the speedo I cannot then see what's going on outside the windscreen for several seconds in which time I could easily have caused an accident.
So I'm the only one with proof of capability and the only one not actually capable. As my old friend Graham would have said "Go figure"

Re: Driving at 101, Safe or not?
Nothing wrong with changing gear on a bend Neil, but going round corners, for example turning left or right from a main road, the gear changing should be done before the turn as both hands are needed to turn the steering wheel. IMHO.

Re: Driving at 101, Safe or not?
What about people who drive with only one hand/arm? I have often wondered how safe some disabled people are behind the wheel. I know some cars are modified but not always. Before you all start shouting at me, I am not picking on disabled people just asking a logical question.
