Dryathlon? No Thanks.
So, Cancer research have had a wonderful new idea.
Give up drinking for January and send them the cash.
http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/supp...nges/dryathlon
A nice idea for them, not a very good idea for the drinks industry though is it?
Can you imagine how many pubs would end up closing if we all joined in? How many redundancies would be forced onto breweries when lack of sales force them to reduce their staff?
I've no problem with charities trying to get extra cash, should it be at the expense of another industry though?
After all, charities are just another form of industry these days.

Less,
I though Jan was always the lowest drinking month of the
year as people begin new years resolutions, try to lose weight from Christmas and new year excesses, etc

Totally agree with you about charities Less, when I got involved with the National Asthma Campaign (now Asthma U.K.)I was appalled when I got the balance sheet through the post and the rules and regs involved. There was on 19% of the money raised which actually went to where most people thought it was going, the rest was used on salaries and transport, and I was informed that if we raised any money it had to be sent to head office, a statement which got the two fingered salute from me, money raised here was spent here, for the benefit of local people, and that was every penny.

Re: Dryathlon? No Thanks.
I agree, Jaysay, that administration costs take up a lot of the donations made, which is not what the ‘givers’ intend the money for. A few years ago the adults in my family decided that instead of buying gifts for each other at Christmas (although we would still buy for the young ones of course) we would donate money to buy a goat or a sheep, a water purifier, etc., for some poor person in a Third World country.
Must admit, gave us a good feeling at the time. Did this the following couple of years – but then started getting inundated with begging requests from the same charity throughout the year. The good quality paper, the glossy literature and the postage would not have come cheap, a few goats would have had to be sacrificed to pay for it all - and I bet the charity isn't administrated by volunteers either.
On top of that the wording almost ‘demanded’ that we continue giving – so we stopped!

I gave up alcohol five weeks ago. Mainly for health problems that have plagued me this past year, but also because I knocked over a glass of whisky and it went inside my pc of which cost me around £1000. Thankfully the shop managed to clean it up. Most of it went inside the video card, which was stripped down and cleaned. £50 later my pc is fine....

It usually would be for me. I would be recovering from the 6 bottles of whisky, 20-50 beers and other alcoholic beverages.

Re: Dryathlon? No Thanks.
I did "dryathlon" last year. Not to raise money, just to have a month without alcohol to see if I missed it.
