BBC News - London Metropolitan University students fear deportation

Hmm..I'm probably a little stupid, but the way I read this...

a) A university can dish out visas to get bums on seats
b) These bums on seats allegedly spend money to boost our economy
c) There is no evidence of (b)
d) The university has no method of checking these bums turn up for lectures
e) University vice chancellor uses a phrases like 'not particularly cogent' to dispute observation (d)

It's all fine and dandy to quote a figure of £12.5 billion loss to export, without giving a shred of evidence to back up this figure.

Nowhere in this piece does it say where the funding for these places come from. I strongly suspect some, if not all, comes from my taxes.

Now I don't mind chucking a few pence a week to someone less fortunate who wants to learn and better themselves, but my mind does not feel particularly cogent to being taken for a ride

I'd suggest a personal escort by an MP with a one way ticket.

This has been going on for years, some of these so called Universities (and I use that in the vaguest of terms) have been set up above takeaways in major cities, yet nobody has every attended any lectures, just a scam to get into the country then disappear into the black economy

Re: Edukashun in tudays Britun

Wow... strong opinions here!

My university took a register in every lecture... if you missed three you got booted out. It was as simple as that! But maybe they're usless in London?

And these 'bums on seats' do boost economy... they have to fund the education themselves... you don't think they come into the country, get a student loan out, and Bob's your uncle! They get a free ride!? It's not like that at all for the foreign people who want to study in our country... It's their money, well, their family's money! Granted you might get the odd person who just wants access to the country, but who knows.

I think you're giving them a hard time here. I have friends at uni from many parts of Asia and Africa and they get no help from our government! And given that the government has cut funding for universities and so tuition fee's have risen, your tax could hardly go towards these people for their 'so-education'... :/

If anything, we should moan about the British people who get student loans out, and bum around university cause they can't be arsed to work... and believe me, I've known a few! I am more than grateful for the tax payers and government for funding my education, I wouldn't have had the chance to get where I want to be any other way <3

If there are genuine students on these courses and they are going to have the plugs pulled before finishing their courses I think that is wrong.

Re: Edukashun in tudays Britun

Would have thought the downgrading of exam results for 60,000 British school leavers was a tad more important than some non story about a few foriegn students.. but then again the tory press have moaned about the excellent grades our kids have gained over the last 10 -15yrs..and noted this years GCSE results are the worst since 1991...these are British kids that are now looking for work and have had the goal posts moved over the last two weeks by this destructive government.

BBC News - English GCSEs will not be regraded, says Ofqual

Re: Edukashun in tudays Britun

The main problem here seems to be that these "students" come here by paying (a good thing for the economy) but then some of them (unfortunately an amorphous figure that no-one seems to be able ascertain) decide, either before they get here or after they arrive (again, as usual, nobody seems to know), that they are well placed to "disappear" into the black labour market (black as in economy not as in racial terms of course). The difficulty is that if we have got their money it doesn't matter if they don't turn up but we are still left with the problem of illegally entering (or at least staying in) the country but, more importantly, the loss of places to British kids at these universities.
Whilst the problem of illegal immigrants is important I think it is more shameful that talented British youngsters are missing places because of it. I am of course assuming that by the time the universities realise what has happened it is too late to offer the places out to others as they will be well under way.

Re: Edukashun in tudays Britun

I recently attended my daughters graduation at uni of beds, and the buissnes diplomas recipients were listed in the events programme, not one had a western name, they were all far- eastern , now I no I could be wrong and they could all be 2nd 3 rd generation and be full British citizens, but from the talk with my daughter and her friends points to that they are migatory students. They had obviously attended their courses to receive their diplomas.

Although the system is obviously flawed and abused tremendously.

If we the British public have something we can export, then we should take full advantage, and regulate it much more than it is

Re: Edukashun in tudays Britun

I have no doubt that anyone who went to university has personal anecdotes about foreign students working their fingers to the bone whilst their Brit counterparts were out getting lashed surviving on a tin of baked beans and a packet of crisps each week whilst dodging paying their rent to Rigsby

This is not about genuine students.

Ignoring all the smoke and blinds about billions in exports...simple facts are..

EU students get subsidised to come here and then vanish off the radar

None EU students pay a course fee to come into this country and then vanish off the radar

All because the universities do not check the registers once they have the bums on seats.

Bear in mind also that the universities that were checked amount for 26% of all foreign students. Its an oxymoron but its nothing short of legalised illegal entry

Re: Edukashun in tudays Britun

I thought eu citizens had a right to work and live here?
Bar a few of the later entry countries

and I have watched tv program's that have concentrated on this issue, and it does seem to be a hellavolot of London based "uni" that are over a laundrette that have the " problem"

As I say, I am sure this problem could be regulated a lot better than it is

Do EU students specifically receive subsidies from us to study in this country?

However, more importantly, why on earth would any EU citizen take all the time and trouble to register as a student simply to disappear? As ChurchFC points out, as an EU citizen, they can simply move here anytime they want.
