Re: Exit Poll
It is true that coalitions are common throughout Europe, but individual parties there are much narrower in the political spectrum. In the UK, the Labour and Conservative parties are themselves coalitions of opinion. The Labour Party represents all political opinion from the centre right to the extreme left short of the Workers Revolutionary or Communist Parties (and by the way, where were THEY during this election? Never saw sight nor sound of them). The Conservative Party represents all political opinion from the centre left to the extreme right short of the BNP or (judging from their Party Political Broadcast, UKIP).
The Liberal Democrats overlap the two big parties, and attract people in the centre disillusioned with the other two parties. A coalition with the Conservatives doesnt broaden the basis of the political opinion of the Government. It puts together two factions who have different views about achieving the same ends.
I wish the coalition well, because it is going to have to take some difficult decisions to get us out of the mess we are in. I'm just not sure the overall Parliamentary infrastructure is grown up enough to do it.
