Falkland Islands
It's always interesting to see UK politicians trying to juggle their desire to be seen as right-on modern day thinkers, whilst at the same time having to justify positions that have arisen from our gung-ho colonial past.
David Cameron is an intelligent man, so presumably he can see what a nonsense his comments about Falkland Islanders determining their own destiny are, because all the pro Argentine residents were expelled from the islands in the 19th century. Its like taking a vote on Blackburn's player of the year at Turf Moor.
The Argentine President is playing to the gallery by trying to get Britain to the negotiating table. There is an election there later in the year, and she sees votes in adopting an aggressive position.
In the end, nothing will happen. The Argentinians won't invade again, because there is no stomach for it, given what happened in 1982, and the Falklands will stay British.
Lets hope its all done without anybody getting hurt.

Re: Falkland Islands
Sorry to disagree with you here, but Argentina did not colonise the islands.
This is interesting:
fleet street fox: Dear Argentina...
And what about the islanders rights to self determination?
I found this quote on a Palenstinian website on that very subject.
"There is a recognised right to self-determination in international law..... It is clearly illegal under international law to deprive a people of their right to self-determination by using forcible actions including use of violence."

From what I can gather there wasn't an established Argentinian presence on the island when we took it over - just a bunch of vagabonds and pirates. Secondly, as the present population have been established there for 180 years, I would say that Cameron's correct that they have a right to determine their own destiny. If we follow your historical precedent, then presumably, the majority of Argentinians have no right to determine their own destiny, as their forefathers robbed the land from the indigenous population when they colonised the country.
Even the Guardian supports the right of the islanders to determine their own destiny. I reckon you and your mate, Cristina are out on your own on this one!

Re: Falkland Islands
I think the Falkland Islanders should decide - I would go to live there if it was a bit more interesting!
(2nd thoughts - it's probably a bit more interesting than Telford!)

Re: Falkland Islands
im all for kicking argentinas arse again if need be infact it will be a refreshing change to have our troops fighting for our interests and not americas or indeed actually fighting for something that is actually any of our buissness.
take our troops out of the goat humpers countries and stick them in teh falklands and see if any argies are up for a scrap
a report not long ago claimed there is significant oil reserves under teh falklands so expect america to show interest pretty rapid if owt kicks off

I agree that our troops need pulling out, I also agree that if they have to, going back into the Falklands, however I don't quite feel as gung-ho as you, they should only go there if invited by the islanders themselves.
After all hasn't oil been found around there? Who would be the asset strippers, the argies or us, isn't that what the latest saber rattling is really about?

Re: Falkland Islands
Couldn't take back the Shetlands never mind the Falklands. We got no carriers, no fleet air arm, and no frigates to sit in bomb alley to protect the beachheads.

i wouldnt say so coz we were pretty admamant the gaff was ours before oil was dicovered there although like i said now oil is in the equation good old america will no doubt be at hand to help out this time around
mind you its not guarentted they will help us out they may help out the argies as the good old USA had no problem both funding the IRA for many years and been our alli because america saw them as freedom fighters and not scumbag terrorists .
its a tough call and it may come down to how far a countries leader is willing to go.We know how far british leaders are willing to go for america infact for the past 20 years our elected leaders have quite happily gone as far as to touch their toes to enable been well and truely shafted by america but no reports yet as to how far the argies leader will go to please america.
all just hypathetical but when it comes to uncle sam oil does have a funny effect on their morals
