Re: favourite toys
I had a Bako Building Set which I loved. It was the fore-runner of Lego and had sort of wire "scaffolding" and bakelite bricks and windows that slotted in so you could build houses. My brothers and I also had an electric train set but we rarely got near it as our dad always got there first.
I was never very keen on dolls, being the despair of my mother as I was such a tomboy, but I remember a shop near Church Railway Station that, for a long time, had a very large (about 3' tall) doll in the window. It was dressed in a red velvet "shepherdess" dress with white petticoats underneath and, for some reason, I coveted that doll. Just as well I didn't get it as it would have stood in a corner, entirely unplayed-with, and a complete waste of money.

(There was no party really and forgot about it a day later.) I addressed all the envelopes with the little play stamps that you get in the set! When I got back to school after the holidays they all told me that the post man had knocked all their parents up and they had to pay the 12p (I think it was at the time) postage costs.

Re: favourite toys
An erector set and match box cars. With 5 kids in our family we didn't get much but shared toys pretty well. Also our parents would buy the type of toys that we could use alot of imagination with!

I suppose that goes hand in hand with erecting a tent under the duvet?

Re: favourite toys
Hey Cashman et al,
An erector set had all these metal pieces that fit together with tiny screws and nuts. You could follow various designs and create buildings, train tressels, etc. It was quite tedious work but very enjoyable for me and my brothers and sister during the cold winters of New England.
It was kinda like the Lincoln logs (little logs which you build log cabins and such with) and then the legos. Both these were much less tedious and over took the erector set!
Spuggie J - I have no idea what any of those words mean (tablet, flesh, meccano tower). Didn't want to offend if you stated the same thing I just described! I'm still trying to get a handle on this "foreign" language of my ancestors! BIG Smile!
