The digestive capabilities of birds and grazing animals are quite different so that doesn't surprise me but most fowl will snaffle up anything they find with no ill effects.
Anything that can merrily peck away at dog muck and thrive won't be worried by a sliced loaf.
Agree with this ... I suppose that none of you have had the opportunity to see a crow eating a freshly killed skunk
"Naturalist Chris Packham, presenter off the BBC’s Autumn Watch, said: “I wouldn’t stop anyone from feeding birds. We send out the message that wildlife needs our help all the time so it seems a bit churlish to tell people what food to use.”
I read that Chris Packham said something to the effect, "we should let endangered species like the Panda die out naturally rather than spending loads of money on them when they'll die out anyway!" This was an article in one of the tabloids.
I've heard that white bread is bad for water birds innards, brown bread is better as it's got more roughage. Another problem is people tend to throw the bread in regardless whether the birds eat it or not and this causes pollution to the water and attracts rats.
But you rarely see a dead duck or any other water birds in the park - white bread just causes them a lingering belly ache and bowel problems ... So only wholemeal Kingsmill in the future and no mouldy old dough
People did used to eat Seagulls - but it's a bit politically incorrect these days, even though there are loads of them. I don't know what they taste like. Seagull eggs and plover eggs used to be available in grocers back before the 60's I think.
The best stuff to feed to ducks is barley. You can buy a 25kg sack for about £6, much better for them than bread.
