me dad n mam used to send me on a thursday for a upside down mixture in two dishes,a bit embarassed walking in to chippy with dishes you could bath in.....he...he best two chippies around clayton street chippy in harwood, and if you are ever going through todmorden towards bacup call in at grandma pollards excellent, also its open from 7-30am-9-30pm.

Will agree on the chippy in clayton street harwood,there used to be a good un in rishton, arnolds at furthergate was good as well, he used to cook on a coal fired range........eh that's going back in time. Ever asked for scraps in a chippy

Scraps oh aye.Get lucky and get a big one with a piece of fish in it.Actually have to make my own fish ' n' Chips myself over here,.Girls love em and they ge the scraps.When we are in blighty and i ask them what they want for tea, chippy, not any B*** M*** or K**C.Na me kids love good wholesome food.All washed down with a bottle of Tizer or Irn Bru.They know wahts good my kids do

oooooo i loved the clayton st, chippy in gt; harwood when i lived there.

when we were kids we always went to the chippy for scraps & we would get a good sized bag to join at mmmmmmmmm jummy.

Lucky Accrington folks, having decent chippies available! While we can occasionally get something that masquerades as fish and chips here in the USA, there are **zero** UK-style chippies. I have had to learn to make my own, which is a lot of mess in the kitchen. My nephews, however, really appreciate the effort!

I can also go to a local Irish pub (not one of those Irish-themed pubs you seem to be getting in the UK) which serves very decent food. They have a "Dublin-style" fish and chips on the menu, which isn't quite the same thing (and only one type of fish), but quite tasty just the same. At least they have the good sense to serve malt vinegar and not tomato catsup. Note: I can hear the AccyWebbers hissing and booing even at this distance, but have pity on those of us without a proper chippy!

Not sure I agree with you on that one. While folks in the USA seem to munch on just about any fried food you can name (while I like a good piece of fried chicken, that's something that KFC doesn't make - a good one, I mean!) fish and chips have not been able to catch on as a fast food. Now, if we could just persuade a really good, experienced chippy to do it up right and open up a few shops on our side of the pond, perhaps that would change. A couple of fast-food chains tried it (Arthur Treacher's and Long John Silver's) but they have not had huge success (Treachers was doing all right for a while, but they didn't treat their franchisees very well, and I haven't seen one of their shops in years).

Part of the problem may be that a lot of Americans just are not big fish eaters.

I have been going to the chippy at the bottom of feilding lane for a while now.....STAR EAST I highly RECOMMEND it. Not only is the food tasty it is also good price wise.

The fish are very nice at the one next to the Marlborough club at Oaklea. My onlt critisism is the price. What used to be classed as a cheap meal is now an expensive treat.

One more note - the fish and chips at Treacher's and Long John Silvers were not very good. Better than none at all, but that's about the most that could be said for it (and you could not even say that for some of the shops). I believe that a lot of the American public has come to believe that these mediocre products are pretty much the standard for fish and chips. It would take a lot to overcome this low opinion of fish and chips!

If I had not been to some very fine chippies in the UK, I might be just as misinformed.
