Re: Fly tipping

If ever a country had completely lost its way in the disposal of rubbish, its the UK.

At the end of the day, the Council are responsible for ensuring that all waste is properly disposed of.

It intrigues me when I read of Bin Collection wagons 'leaving behind' items of rubbish because they don't comply with the Council's strict rules regarding what they will collect. Does the Council think the non-collected items will vanish into thin air because they don't collect them? At some point, they will have to be collected and disposed of.

And a visit to a Council tip now ranks somewhere between the reception counter at a Nazi concentration camp and the departure gate at a Ryanair flight. Every one of your credentials is examined by a member of staff chosen specifically for their lack of charm and downright rudeness, and woe betide anyone who has something that doesn't fit into one of their pigeon holes. Try turning up at a Council tip with a brick wrapped in silver foil and the label 'Danger - Asbestos' and see the reaction.

Its little wonder people go and fly tip down country lanes. Horrible for the local residents, but completely the blame of the system.

In Spain, they have 'basuras' where people can dump everything including fridges, washing machines and three piece suites. The Council don't ask questions and wouldn't begin to dream of making a charge. They simply do their job and clear the basura every day, including Sundays.

Re: Fly tipping

If residents report any fly tipping to us Councillors we will always ask for it to be removed. People don't always let us know - our contact details are on the Council website.

Think yourself lucky it could have been covered by more asbestos.

Because the land where the asbestos has been dumped is private land, its taking a lot longer to safely remove it than all of us would have hoped. The Council is doing a land search at the moment to see owns the land. Its not an ideal situation, but the Council unfortunately has to go through this procedure.

Thanks for your reply Bernard. It's nice to be updated. I hope you find the landowner ASAP

8 days and counting..who's doing the land search? Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles?

The 'jobsworth' enforcement officers employed by the council are more interested in slapping stickers on pensioners wheeliebins than dealing with 'real' waste issues.

Thank God you don't have hurricane Sandy to deal with....'Oh hang on, it'll take a couple of weeks to find the landowner before we can move the Tanker leaking toxic waste on Dutton Street.'

Asbestos is dangerous....move it..then worry about who to charge

Re: Fly tipping

My missus walked up Plantation Road this afternoon with Max and the people who have the stables off Plantation Road were moving this rubbish themselves as it was blocking their access to the stable. What they called the council cannot be repeated.

That could lead in this P.C. world to them being prosecuted, not just for H&S to the community, but not protecting themselves.
Of course they want it moved, but how are they moving it and where to?

Another can of worms might just be happening.
