Don't know about foxes but there seems to have been an explosion of the badger population in the North of England. I saw about 5 dead on the side of roads recently while in the Lakes and down the Ribble valley too.

Surely, if they are dead that's a cull of badgers not an explosion?

Have rarely seen one (dead or alive) before -to have seen so many must mean there are more around -either that or they have suddenly all become suicidal!

Actually now I think about it, it may just reflect the fact that there are more cars on the roads these days= more accidents with badgers possibly!

I had a day last week with a group of retired farmers who were on their hols on Lake Garda and came to visit farms with me for a day (yes, they do enjoy it before you ask!). They were from many different areas of the UK and they all asked if badgers were a big problem here as in the UK -seems they blame them for carrying TB.

Perhaps they don't kill them for pleasure! It's possible they kill them all out of panic or confusion. Fact is having a lot of birds trapped in a hen hut is not nature - so a fox getting into a hen hut may react that way because of it's abnormal and un-natural situation.

I think you are right on this one ... foxes are not "evil" killers, they are, well, foxes. It's the nature of the beast. When my JRT chases a squirrel, and I put the brake on the leash, she gives me that questioning look, as if she is saying: "Hey, I'm a terrier; and this is what terriers do."

Don't want to sound pedantic but fox hunting is not illegal.. hunting any wildlife using more than one dog is illegal.

I've seen more foxes in London than I ever saw around Accy.. used to go out for rabbits on weekends outside Accy and only ever saw one fox.. must have seen half a dozen in central London, I've had them walk past me on the Old Kent Road early morning and not even look up, most of them look like skinny stray dogs.

I take it that when we are talking fox hunting, we are referring to upper class tory twits riding around in silly outfits, drinking out of antique flasks, while the dogs and the peasantry do all the work.

And your original question "are foxes a problem" I think they have always been a problem for game keepers.. the old chestnut about them breaking into hen houses or poultry farms and killing loads of chickens for the fun of it is rubbish.. foxes are dogs.. they maybe clever but they don't carry bolt cutters or crowbars and can't break into any self respecting owner of hen coups.

Fox hunting with dogs is illegal! They should shoot them in winter - easy, just put down some fresh meat near a shooting hide and then shoot them. That's if any population control is needed by game keepers etc. As for farm lifestock - sheep are too big for a fox to kill, maybe they take the odd lamb but most sheep/lambs are killed by rogue dogs.

Tally ho fox hunting is a barbaric way to kill foxes (like Badger baiting) and should never be made legal again.

Yeh foxes are every where in London and walking through any street in the early hours, there will usually be a fox seen looking for food. So I don't know why they aren't seen more often in the centre of smaller towns like Accrington?
