Could be an extremely expensive way to implement this idea, as would need some sort of technology to link up with the DVLA to check your yearly mileage. Lots of people would complain was interfering with their Human Rights.

Suppose, in a way, we are taxed like this anyway, due to the fact that motorists who do lots of mileage per year, usually have larger cars and taxed on its car emmisions. Was surprised yesterday, talking to a neighbour who works on the motorways, that he uses his little Smart car for travelling to and fro, tax is only £35 per year !
Technology like this in cars is probably going to be fully implemented by 2015 anyway. All technology is advancing and soon enough we will see computers more readily available for everyone, simply because the government wants to use it more and more to track us.

As for the laws relating to it, that's all likely to be reformed soon enough as well. Data protection will be the first to go. I'm looking forward to new technology. I'm fortunate enough to get to work on the papers which will be put before European Parliamentarians who will have to decide how to advance such things. Lucky me

Suppose you are correct about technology, but it really wouldn't be very fair to charge people on their mileage as, at the moment, is all about environment and car emissions, and I suppose someone in a Smart car, could easily do 30,000 per year, but with lesser emissions than a 2-litre BMW. However, suppose you could argue are wearing the roads away too. All factors would have to be taken into consideration.

I think it's a good idea. I think car owners should be taxed according to how much they use their cars anyway though, which would be a much more general way of doing what he has proposed.
err drivers already pay a thing called road tax infact we also pay tax on our fuel and tax on our insurance

maybe to raise extra cash cyclists should have to pay road tax and be insured to be allowed on the roads

This is opting out of the ratrace. I recommend it if you don't need to work to survive.
I was thinking of you but I am far to polite to mention you by name.
I had to laugh when you mentioned "the ratrace", Ossy is so laid back I am surprised it has not fallen into Tinker Brook yet

Re: Free parking at Supermarkets to be scrapped

We are actually quite lucky in Hyndburn we have free town centre parking and supermarkets don't charge, but in some places especially Morrisons, you can park on their car park free so long has you show a till receipt from the store on exiting

Why bother with charging in the first place? Surely the simple solution is to shut down supermarket car parks completely so if people do have to use these places then at least they can get some exercise and lose some fat as they cart their bag loads of junk food back home.

The ASDA carpark would make an ideal location for the new Accy Super Mosque. The Mohammedians would be happy, the small shopkeepers and market stall holders would be happy, the NHS would be happy and I would be happy.

I think cyclists should have to be insured, but road tax would be ridiculous considering the lack of wear and tear a bicycle has on a road and the lack of need for parking, or certainly much space to part.

I see little point in trying to justify the use of cars to a student who can't afford one and HAS to take the bus along with thousands of others, particularly one whose family doesn't own a single car at all or have a licence between them.

Most people don't even need to leave the house these days for grocery shopping when there is such thing as online shopping with quite low cost delivery, if not free when you spend over a certain amount.

I think people just don't like cutting back on their luxuries. Having never driven, I simply can't appreciate all this fuss. The bus is not above me, and neither is walking. Lots of students have those shopping bags on wheels here! I love living in a city where the Green Party has real influence.

Re: Free parking at Supermarkets to be scrapped

road tax dosnt actually go towards the repair of roads its just a name , i thought road tax was a tax paid to maintain roads for years but as it turns out its just a name so it dosnt matter how much wear and tear a vehicle causes to roads

i dont think it would be pheasable anyway but i do think cyclists especially adults should have to pay an insurance premium because if one hits a car or causes an accident the poor victim ends up suffering at their own expense because theres no real resource to get dammage repaired unless you can sue te cycleist but lets face it that is unlikly to result in anything but been paid say £1000 damages over a life time at £1 per week or somthing

another arument though regarding road tax could be that they get special areas at junctions assigned to them and have cycle lanes and these arnt made for free by the road painting fairys so why should they be on the roads for free when cars and motorcycles cant.If cow flatulance can be blamed for damaging the ozone layer im pretty sure its safe to say cycleists arnt exactly %100 emission free

mobility scooters shoudlnt be allowed on the road either unless fully insured as theres some crazy old people or exceptionaly fat people drive them things like lunartics lol

have i left anyone out i would hate to think there was someone left un-offended lol

but if I was a road painting gnome, I would object to the fairies getting all the credit.
