French turnout unusually high.

The French have showed up in force today for the first round of their presidential election. Early turnout, apparently, has reached levels not seen since 1981.

Is it not true that the French are starting the process of electing not only a president but a member of your government as well? Through the wonders of the European Union, the new head of state of the French Republic will also become a fully paid-up member of the EU Council, that elite supranational institution that decides many of your laws and policies.

Good luck with that!

I think the French have got the right idea , only six weeks of electioneering between ballots, not the endless stuff we have in the US , the next president doesn't get elected until November 2008 yet the politicians have been at it for months , the sodding Clinton woman and the rest them need to get back to the House and Senate and concentrate on the jobs they were elected to do

So true. I am sick to death of them already. We need term limits for all!

Wonder if they get as much bumf through the letter box as we do? As for the power the French Pres has in the EU depends on who sides with them, which more often than not is Germany. Whichever candidate gets in will be a baby boomer so maybe there is the appeal to voters, that and the mess France is in. If you put a cap on the amount of time Presidential candidates have to electioneer would that not narrow the appeal they have?
