This is the same old argument. The funding is there to be used. If it wasn't for people like Gayle securing it, this area would miss out, and other areas would bag all the dosh.
That's the system. You have to work with it, or miss out.
Although I agree the system is flawed, and Branson's lottery bid, were all the profits went to good causes, was a much better idea. Sadly the government rejected that idea though.

Rejecting Gayles offer of help has just probably got him more bad publicity here on AccyWeb than the good publicity he was hoping his idea would get him.

I'd go for the latter. Wonder if accy observer will pick up on it seeing as he was in there shouting off about it!

You can't really criticise him, he had an ill thought out idea, and went to the press with it, and they ran it. It happens everyday, it's called Google Page Ranking.
I was sort of involved with the Pride Scotland celebrations for a couple of years. Even with those two great cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh, they had to alternate it between the two places each year, and that was with a whole social infrastructure of gay/lesbian/bi/transgender/whatever centre, bars, pubs, clubs, shops, and societies in both cities. Something little old Accrington doesn't have. In fact there are not even any gay social groups in Accy, the nearest is in Chorley.
By the way, I'm not forcing anything down anyone's throats, but if anyone reading this does need any information relating to this topic, either advice, counselling, or just someone to talk to, the phone number for Lancashire Friend is on this link.

So, maybe he didn't want to be in charge of organising one - just wanted someone else to come up with one.
I'd like to see more events and things happening in Accy but I'd hate to have to be the one organising anything.
Still no need to reject Gayle's offer of help quite so emphatically as she describes.

Who? There is no one else. Like I said, in my opinion just a ruse for a bit of publicity for his shop.
As I said earlier, if he was really serious, a float in the town carnival would be a better start, and show that the gays and lesbians that live in Hyndburn are part of the larger community, not seperate from it.

Re: Gay Parade For Accy
I think the carnival float idea is a good one Rindy, maybe it should be suggested to the organisers.

I think it's the exact opposite to be honest - he wants to be in sole control of organising it and didn't want to accept a genuine offer of help in case it polluted his idea.

I don't, but I think it is a better idea than the idea of a whole gay carnival parade in Accy.
I believe there is no need for separatation in our community. Life's happily moved on, and gays and lesbians will probably be well represented on other floats in the main carnival...probably even on the Stanley one, as well as other groups.

Re: Gay Parade For Accy
I doubt whether he'll want a float in the carnival - it doesn't go past Cross St does it?

He can organise it, and be the only person in it!
Sounds spectacular...as a flop!
Leave him to it.

Re: Gay Parade For Accy
Well if he wants to organise one all by himself good luck to him - but a one man carnival will be a pretty boring affair.
Like Garinda I too believe there is no need for separation in our community. It's a bit silly really. I mean 'gay rights' means nothing when no-one has any more or less rights be they gay or straight, similarly married couple, unmarried couple, living togther, living apart, single individual .......... etc. We're all the same, all human beings who live in Hyndburn................. I'm not sure I make sense. I know what I mean but it's hard to explain in words.

I understand what you mean, and agree.
The whole history of gay pride marches started in the early 70's by a small group of people at the LSE. They wanted to show a positive, visible presence, at a time when there was only negative media coverage around the issue. There was also inequality in law regarding some aspects of homosexuality, that they wanted to challenge.
Happily we've moved on, in no small part to the current government changing some of the more antiquated laws.
Bye bye ghetto, and hello to living as part of the wider community.
