After the recent spate of glassings in pubs around Accy,is anyone else in agreement with me & think it about time plastic glasses were introduced in pubs/clubs?I know they already serve drinks in them in some city centres if your drinking outside,but surely if it saves one more person from losing an eye or being dis-figured it would be right to use them in doors as well.I don't know if they use them for shorts but the pint & 1/2 pint ones are a very much sturdier drinking vessel than those used at bar-b ques & Martholme Grange back in the 70's

In Colne during the Blues festival every pub has to use plastic glasses because of glassings and its also easier to clean up.... it does cost the pub more money as they are not reusable (they melt in the dishwasher, trust me lol) they should be recyclable tho... it ios a good idea but some drinks (bene and hot) dont go into 'plastics' well lol

its really crazy.... I mean plastic glasses used to be for the little kids in case they broke them.... now we have to have them for some so called adults... maybe a few highchairs and play pens would not go a miss.....

why worry there soon won't be any pubs left: in anycase:

the simple answer would be to make the MINIMUM sentence for anyone using a glass as a weapon= 5 years.

Yes, it's a sad state of affairs.

When did the word 'glass' become a verb?

It seems to be happening more and more though so something needs to be done......there needs to be a tougher deterrent for many crimes including murder so this is probably way down on the list for the government.

In the meantime it looks like plastic glasses are the answer.

Might not be much consolation to the victim though,scarred for life,loss of sight.I've no qualms with platic glasses if it saves me or anyone else from permanent scarring for accidently spilling the local psychos pint when he's had a few.Anyone who can do this is probarbly looking foward to prison IMO.Same goes for knives.

Even if they introduce plastic glasses, there are still the bottles, which a lot of youngsters drink straight from these days. So they would either have to make the bottles plastic as well, or insist the drinks were decanted.

Went to the Party in the Park in Blackburn a couple of years back(when it was still at Witton, outdoors,) and they were insisting that glass bottles weren't allowed.

I went to see Paddy McGuinness at King George's Hall in Blackburn on Thursday and noticed that they served drinks in plastic glasses.

I also saw WKD in plastic bottles.

Serving drink only in plastic glasses would probably be the last nail in the coffin for many pubs, it would certainly drive the last of the 'grown ups' - of whatever age, out.
this strikes me as another case of punishing the innocent and law abiding to get at the guilty.

Agree with Polly on this, there is no way I would go out to be served in plastic glasses.

I work in the city centre in Manchester, (in a bar) and we, and all the other bars/clubs use plastic, not just because of safety etc, but its so much easier to clean, and even operate the business. The pubs/clubs are way too busy to be serving glass, which have to be cleaned etc. The whole venue serves around 100 people every ten/twenty minutes, it would be impossible to use glass, we would simply run out.

Then you get the odd ball who thinks their a cut above the rest, demanding a glass. Ha.

PS: Easier to clean asin, throw away. Not clean the plastics lol.

I worked at Martholme Grange in the 70s and plastic glasses were only used on Thursday's Disco Night, the other nights ordinary glasses were in use. We changed to plastics for this night not so much because people were using them as weapons(we had very very few incidents) but more to cut down breakages, we used to loose around 40 to 50 glasses a night in breakages and theft

These problems seem to have been getting worse since the liberalisation of the licensing laws, it only really seems to be an issue in and around the Town Centre venues, most of which dont open till late evening, and continue into the early hours of the morning. Many of the people drinking here have either been drinking for several hours in other pubs, or have been drinking at home prior to going out and have had far too much to drink come "kicking out" time. I really think in this country we need the restrictions of more controlled licensing hours...surely...say 2 am...for example is late enough for anyone! I'm afraid the British dont partake of Alcohol in the same way as our continental neighbours...what works for them does'nt seem to work for us! Until we become more responsible these things will happen...the problem isnt the drinking vessels, its whats contained in them..and the quantity thats consumed!
