Good Friday

My mother would never let us eat meat on a Good Friday. Fish was fine, but no meat. Its over 20 years since she died, but I still try and keep to that rule, more out of respect to her than for any religious observance.

Also, the parish priest would never allow the parish club to open on a Good Friday. It didn't stop the hardened drinkers, who used to meet up in the pub down the road!

I was just wondering if anybody else still sticks to those rules?

although i was never baptised, my gran and mum where both Catholic (my mum wasn't a practising one) me and my sis used to have to go to church on Sundays and where always made to eat fish EVERY Friday, i was saying to my lad on Monday night that i was going to get some fish for dinner Friday, it's funny what sticks in your head isn't it

was brought up not to scran meat on Good Friday, still don't.

Not being a Catholic, never had any dietry restrictions.

What we always did as a family on Good Friday was go for a walk.

A marathon of a walk.

A route march over moor, fell, or nab.

Very happy memories of those Good Fridays.

what baffles me is the fact that kids don't know anything about Easter other than they get eggs....i had to explain to my mates girls the other day about Jesus dying on the cross and rising again, they didn't have a clue, what miffs me off is that they learn about Judaism, hinduism etc in school but what about Catholicism and Christianity? they do absolutely naff all on that subject and that really pees me off

Sadly they can probably fully explain every other religion's high days and holidays, other than Christianity's.

Not being particularly religious we have no special associations or traditions & pretty much eat what we feel like.

I think that the requirement to not eat meat on any Friday was dropped some years ago - it is probable that the original requirement resulted in the creation of "butter pies".

Your quite right Barrie the no meat no Friday rule was dropped by the Catholic Church years ago, but I still keep to it most of the time, and most certainly on Good Friday

i was brought up C of E ... dad cooked dinner on good friday .. he fried the fish cos i wouldnt eat it if my dad hadnt cooked it

.. and then open a tin of salmon and salad for tea... never eat meat on good friday ... mind you mum & dad were from northern ireland and brought up presbyterians ...

unless theres only fish fingers in teh freezer i will be having my usual chicken madrass on friday with a beer.

the amount of crap iv had to drum out of my kids head about jesus that they have been told at school is ridiculous

Catholics are not the only Christians to observe days of fasting and abstinence . The Eastern Orthodox Christians and Anglican Christians , according to the Book of Common Prayer , have their days for fasting and abstaining from certain foods . It follows on from Jesus' teaching on fasting .

I think you will find that all the main world religions practise fasting in some form or other e.g. Ramadan for Muslims , and certainly in Buddhism .
