It has been suggested by some etymologists that the term was originally "God's Friday" and that "God" and "good" are often substituted for each other or simply become confused because of their similarity. For instance "God be with you", which today has become "good-bye". Maybe Good Friday was originally God’s Friday. But you could argue that we call it Good Friday because the Atonement brought about the greatest good there could be in Christ providing a way for sinful humanity to have hope in an eternal reconciliation with a merciful God.
