Guardsman Neil 'Tony' Downes of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards

Guardsman Neil 'Tony' Downes of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards was Killed in Action in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Saturday 9th June 2007.

I am sure that you will have seen the local news regarding Tony’s death on active service in Afghanistan and you will know that Tony was from Droylsden, Manchester. He was; but his family; originated in the Church & Oswaldtwistle area.

I would like to pay Tribute to this young solder who was proud to served his country and give his life in an operation to bring peace and justice to a troubled region. Neil 'Tony' Downes was my cousin and although I never met him we are all feeling his loss deeply. I know that there will be members of Tony’s family reading this; our deepest sympathies are with you at this sad time. God Bless you.

Malcolm, Joyce and Michael Douglas (Alan & Margaret Douglas’s Lad)

Re: Guardsman Neil 'Tony' Downes of the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards

I am very grateful for your thoughts and the love and warmth of your words, my family have felt deeply about Tony’s death but we are only a branch of Tony family.

Your feelings and regards should be directed to Tony’s direct family in particular his mum and dad; Sheryl and Ronni, I cannot imagine the depth of their pain, but I can understand their sense of Pride.

I made the original post to pass my regards and sympathy to those other members of the family still in the area for whom I have no contact details and to draw attention that even indirectly another son of Church and Oswaldtwistle had given his life for others.

Again, Thank you.

Deepest sorrow for the family.

My step-son is now based in Iraq and we both hope that ALL the troops will be safe and return home soon for good.
