These dwellings were certainly of no architectural merit and it was far more cost effective to pull 'em down.
The demolition of some of those replacement houses more recently was simply as part of the Church Gateway improvement plan, although it is somewhat debatable as to whether this exercise should have been carried out in the absence of a fully funded scheme.

Very few Victorian terraces were built in Lancashire with indoor bathrooms, my present house included. Those house in Church could easily have been improved to offer the modern amenities we've come to expect.
As for their architectural merit, there were probably similar Philistines who thought that the terraced artisans cottages in Battersea in London, should have been demolioshed in the sixties. All of which originally had no indoor bathrooms, but which are now seen as very desirable homes, and easily sell for over half a miilion quid.
I stand by my statement that the older houses in Church were better built than their replacements, which only managed a life of twenty odd years, as opposed to a hundred.
A simple case of economics.

Re: gypsy's....again
As long as Wm Bythes is still operational, there is no point building ANYTHING within half a mile!!!

Or the local planning committee, I thought they kept rejecting all the proposals. I stand by my statement that it is an eyesore.
Maybe any building left unused for x years should be demolished. Like the fire station in Ossy.

Playing by those rules then I suppose Ossy would be classed as a village but I have lived here for over 25 years and never heard it referred to as such.
I know that Huncoat, Green Haworth and Belthorn are villages but I always thought of Ossy as a town.

The houses that were demolished had been used as a ghetto for bad tenants - much to the annoyance of good tenants nearby. It will take time for that reputation to fade.
Now that people are more aware of pollution hazards, there would be difficulties encountered in persuading prospective owners or tenants to live there if they rebuilt.
The Gateway scheme has been abandoned because of the proximity of Blythes, so why should any developer be interested in doing ANYTHING with it?
The nearby derelict property should be demolished and the area landscaped to improve the area for the good tenants who are still there, ensuring that access by caravans is blocked.

Re: gypsy's....again
I like the commercial hotel and dont want it ripped down. This may be just me but I saw it mentioned, and I think its a good building, needs a hell of alot of investment though, but it could be a good point for church with the right backing.

Re: gypsy's....again
I still think the Commercial is an eyesore and has been for too long. It some come down along with the empty shops opposite and the post office. If fact the whole area should be flattened and a decent road junction built there instead of that crazy bottleneck we currently have.

Wont the people living in church have to walk ages to get to a post office then? That seems a bit unfair

Re: gypsy's....again
Blythes is the problem in Church so something needs to be done about Blythes.

Well its gone from one problem in an area to other problems, and its a bit nicer to just talk about horrible buildings causing a problem than actual people, so its not as off track as some of the threads go
