Healthy Accrington Day

Yes I know it wasn't actually called that, but I wonder how many of you were even aware that something was going on at the Town Hall yesterday?

If you happened to be in town between about 12:30 and 1pm and saw a bunch of people marching up and down outside the Town Hall you could be forgiven for thinking that there was some mad protest going on against HBC policies but it was actually a collection of various groups in the borough promoting a healthier lifestyle.

There were people from the Healthy Heart group (in red) people who do tai chi (in purple) people from "stepping out" guided walks (in blue I think) and a couple of schools and a community group amongst others as well as the allotment contingent (in green). I was the one carrying the banner which read "Veg Out" and I couldn't help thinking that it could be interpreted in two ways neither of which promote the idea of growing your own food. I don't know who designed the banners. I just took the one I was given and did my little bit of marching about with the rest.

"Veg Out" could have been interpreted as an objection to vegetables (the exact opposite of what we were supposed to be saying ) or it could be seen, in view of the fact that it was being carried by a fat ugly slob, as promoting the idea of loungeing around all day doing nothing rather than supporting the rest of the group's promotion of healthy diet and excercise. I shall have to re-think any future participation in similar events.

I was rather disappointed that we only went up and down outside the Town Hall. I'd have thought a march up Broadway, along Abbey Street and down Peel Street might have attracted more attention and perhaps we would have ended up like the Pied Piper and brought a trailing crowd behind us to visit the exhibition in the Ballroom.

I would have gone to that, but as I only saw it advertised in the Citizen and we have only got that tonight, it was a bit impossible.

Think it could have been promoted a bit better.

Title of the thread a bit of an oxymoron.
