Here's one to amuse A-b

What's this? Hyndburn Council have created a special memorial garden to commemorate the ending of the Second World War? On reading this plaque you might at first be forgiven for thinking so.

but step back a little and what do we find?

It's the old useless fountain at the bottom of Ormerod Street which was eventually abandoned and filled with earth and a few choice plants. Now our illusgtrious leader would have us believe that it was all intended as a memorial garden in the first place, but we know different don't we?

Bloody hell, its not even positioned properly. Is it squire? You would hope that if they had want to act in a reasonable and practical manner they would have at leased put up a small pedestal or on a decent peace of stone………I’ll pop over either tomorrow or Tuesday and have a look at this one.

Re: Here's one to amuse A-b

having seen your pics just now i have realised what our council do with the tax they lovingly take from us.go to homebase and buy a bloody bench if that is what constitutes the diamond gardens then im sorry i am glad i did not fight in the second world war, sureley our friends at h.b.c could have come up with a bit of a better plan as to how to present this to the people of hyndburn and make it look a bit better than what it is.

To me it looks more like an insult to the men and women who did what they had to in the scond world war. Notice I did'nt say fight , simply because as well as the brave soldiers sailors and airmen tens of thousands of others also played their part. I was lucky enoughto attend the VE day celebrations in Blackpool Tower lasy night , and meet some real vets, many of them in wheelchairs having lost limbs for the cause. I personally would be ashamed if some of those brave people saw what HBC put up in their honourm It reflectsvery badly on the so called leader. I don't know how he has the ordasity to put his name to it..

Unbelieveable, I can't stop laughing.......until I remember how much cash that area has cost us.

And here we are in the middle of July, with National Celebrations in full swing, and not a single flower to be seen. In any other borough in the land such a garden would be a riot of colour all year round. Clearly most of the cost of this project was swallowed up in consultancy fees and feasibility studies and they ran out of cash before they got round to planting the flowers. Or is this like the Hanging baskets for Great Harwood and the timing of flowering is delayed on purpose for an event later in the year? My Ar*e!

How typical of HBC.

It's the same sort of attitude as claiming that 11 up and down ridges in a formation of six concentric circles known as "High Form" were intended as a tribute to the Accrington Pals.

This is NOT a memorial garden in any sense of the word. It was never purpose built as such and to claim it as one not only insults those who gave their all in WWII but also insults the intelligence of those of us living here today.

As for the esteemed Mr. Britcliffe, can there be any more example of self indulgence than to have one's own name emblazoned in glory upon such a plaque? Surly a plaque to commemorate the anniversary of the end of the war (it can only be the plaque which commemorates it after all) could well do without the name of Hyndborg's current master of mayhem emblazoned across it in letters of almost equal size.

Perhaps we should buy him a trumpet for Christmas. He's blown his own so much it must be worn out by now.

It's pathetic isn't it..... I would love to be one of those 'my cup is half full' people who believe that their local council is capable of getting something right. Unfortunately I have mislaid my rose tinted specs and am waiting to see what a hash they make of Broadway.

This is not a memorial, but an insult to everyone who gave their lives and worked so hard during the war.

Typical... it's an insult.

That whole area looks a right mess now, and that cog wheel thingy irritates me too!

In that case Gayle you'll probably be even more irritated to realise that the brass plaque is fairly well hidden by the cog wheel anyway!

maybe a well worded letter to the Observer making our disgust of HBC and in particular that expensive sensation seeker Britcliffe known.

Re: Here's one to amuse A-b

Can I ask? Was this plaque just stuck up was there an appropriate ceremony with representatives of the local clergy, the community at large, the Three Services of our Armed Forces to whom this is supposed to commemorate. To say that commemorations have been taking place for most of the week is there any sign of a service taking place at this Community commemorative focal point?
