Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

just as interesting...what happened to all the electrical gear in there? If they only closed saturday then someones been pretty sharp in moving in there.....and a half price sale already!
The door is a good 'un. I'll have to have a think about that. It's possibly not as obvious as it may look.

HOPWOODS Electrical premises

In days gone by, it was a pub, just forgotten its name this minute, but .. I will think on it! It could have been The Gardeners Arms......

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

That doesn't look much like fancy dress in there does it? Party Spot do fancy dress (as in costumes) don't they? I seem to be in Carnforth more than I'm in Accy these days and I'm feeling decidedly out of touch.

You are correct there, but .. I have it on good authority that a fancy dress shop is gonna be there. There is a clothes shop directly across the road called "REMY" - it looks as though they have probably hired the empty premises for their sale clothes, until the new owners are ready for moving in. Thats what I think anyway

HOPWOODS Electrical - it is gonna be a dress shop!

Million apologies, been given duff information. The man who gave the information out to me meant "posh dress shop" with his wording of "fancy dress".
In fact, its the dress shop from across the way REMY, who have bought the shop, and for a couple of weeks are just using the empty shop to display their SALES GOODS. So, we are all up to date now!

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

Isn't it amazing how one word can mean such different things to different people?

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

Had some friends who spent time in the States - Sian and Bill. Bill has a passion for fancy dress (he once organised a party at the Royal Free Hospital the theme of which was "Come as the disease of your choice"!). Anyroad up, come Christmas, they organised a party and sent out invitations which read "Fancy Dress". Come the night, Sian was dressed as a Christmas tree, and I think Bill was a snowman - all the US contingent turned up in black tie and long frocks (I think it was the men in black tie and the women in long frocks - I think), because that was what they understood by "fancy dress".

In case you are wondering, the party at the Royal Free I went in a spotted frock with a badge that said "London E8" - Hackney. Acne - geddit? - It's a DISEASE!

HOPWOODS Electrical - Have been trying to find an older photo

Just found an older photograph which does show Hopwoods. This photo was taken in March 1990 just before the whole of the top block was refurbished.

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

The upper storey has changed quite a bit hasn't it? (particularly the windows and the door at the Bank St end)

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

i read in the observer of hopwoods closing down. i believe they are now selling by mail order, probably ebay. less stock, less property damage, less rates, less insurance. i can see a lot more shops going like this.

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

I can see their point of view but what about us locals who want to buy a torch bulb? Do we have to look on ebay now?

There's a chap in Darwen who used to have a stall in Botany Bay selling fossils and minerals and he's now doing them on ebay because of thieves and vandals.
