Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

Hopwoods existed before then but elsewhere. I'm just not sure where. Pity it's closing. Wish I'd known earlier.

HOPWOODS Electrical

I'm really sad to hear Hopwoods is closing. I know Mr and Mrs Hopwood did sell it about ... time passes .... maybe two/three years back and the new owners kept the established name on. I know in this day and age, most people seem to frequent Argos, just down the road, but .. what a shame! Hopwoods have been in town for years. They were originally based on Church st/Warner Street. You could walk in their shop on Church Street (now a taxi firm) and walk through into the other part of the shop, which was in Warner Street

That shop was opened as Hopwoods Electrics, by Peter Hopwoods father. They formerly had a shop in Warner St. The Building in little Blackburn Rd was originally the Gardeners Arms.
it had 3 entrances. Blackburn Rd, Bank St & Queen St (originally Cannon St.)

Walter.

Fascinating Walter. So if Queen St was originally called Cannon Street what was Cannon Street called? How long ago was this?

Went into town today, hoping to get a photo, but .. they've gone! The shop is empty! Did anyone manage to take a photo?
Appparently it has been sold and is to be a fancy dress shop.

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

Why would Accy need a fancy dress shop?

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

Wouldn't have thought they needed much in the way of clothing, mind. There was a shop on Accy market that sold undies and little items like nurses outfits, maid's outfits, etc, but it's closed down recently. Must have been something I said ....

Donkeys Years.
Cannon St as you now know it did not exist. The New Hold of Accrington was across the site
now occupied by Barnes Furniture, St James's School, New Era & Bay Horse Buildings.
The Church in Cannon St wasn't there, neither was the railway, that didn't open till 1847.

Walter.

Re: HOPWOODS Electrical

That's interesting, and something I did not notice before. What is the first floor door for at the end of the building?
