How?
How does someone con themselves into being awarded an MBE? I don't have a link but just heard it on the news.

Re: How?
I think the whole honour system is a farce, this just shows it up even more.

Re: How?
Yes that's him. What a thoroughly unpleasant character. It makes a mockery of an MBE received by someone I know for genuine work he has done in the community.

It does, and I'm not taking anything away from the person you know by saying I think the whole honour system is a farce. It just all seems so arbitrary, with so many hard working people going unrewarded, and most of the honours going to the super annuated, fat cat, civil servants in Whitehall, or those purely selfless benefactors to any of the main political parties who end up with a Peerage.

Don't worry too much about him getting the title, he'll never be able to find his seat in the house of Lord's, mummy won't be there to give him directions.

Re: How?
Hasn't he already got a title? He is Sir Mark Thatcher. He inherited his father's baronetcy, which Denis got for services to the distilling industry and being a millionaire.
I know 3 people with Honours, all Civil Servants. One was a lady I worked with in Durham who got the MBE for the charity work she did, one was one of our Inspectors - I don't know why he got his OBE but he was a lovely man, and the other was our Big Boss who got the OBE last time around for being, amongst other things, a Lt. Colonel in the TA and a magistrate. I suppose people like them deserve some reward but I don't like the way entertainers get it, almost as a matter of course, when they've been around a bit. I read in the paper today that Bruce Forsythe was a bit miffed he only got the MBE and wasn't made Sir Bruce - the arrogant ******.

Re: How?
Tony Wright, Labour chairman of the Commons Public Administration Committee, which has investigated the honours system, said: 'If we give honours for honours, we should remove them for dishonours.' Thatcher's title was passed to him when his father, Sir Denis, died in June 2003.
Former Prime Minister John Major awarded Denis Thatcher his baronetcy. He told Wright's committee last May he had been reluctant to award the title but had been lobbied by 'influential figures' in the Conservative Party.
[Quote from the Guardian.]
He'll still inherit another hereditry title on the death of his Mother as well.
