You need the cell number plus the carrier's address, (example, @vmobl.com). Otherwise, I just text directly to an e-mail address. Costs 5 cents per message.

Folks here generally prefer to pick up the phone and talk.

Gosh, and bet they can talk too ... LOL.

Is very handy though bullseyebarb when you are a long way from home and just wish to text that all is OK. I don't often dial on my mobile, just text to my kids (in between land phone calls) to ask everything OK, and they reply "Yes, fine" .. gives me peace of mind for the rest of the week.

And how! A headset or phone to ear at all times, it seems to me.

Cool Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

I still manage without a mobile phone. I suppose in certain circumstances a mobile phone would be extremely useful but surely those are few and far between. In any case a mobile phone is of little use if you are unconscious. How many real emergencies does a person have in a day – a week – a month or a year?

Apart from the emergency aspect all a mobile phone does is make the telecom companies rich.

I wonder how many people would still be alive to day or not been injured by careless drivers if mobile phones had not been invented.

I have never had a video recorder either. I’ve always taken the view if I have to miss a programme because I am watching something else or not being around a TV then too bad. That’s life! Is a TV programme THAT important? I don’t think so!

Talking Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

Well, Jambutty, I have read many a story in the paper where a mobile has saved a life, whether someone stuck on a mountain or out on the sea and yes, sure has been one or two accidents in cars where people have been distracted, that's why, there is the new law on this. Distractions in a car happen all the time, however, from drivers changing CD's or radio programmes. drinking cans of coke, putting on lipstick to that fag droppin' out of your hand. So not all about the phone.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

When someone isn't home at the time they are usually home a reassuring call to explain why saves a lot of worry.

I remember missing a bus and my mother being worried sick that something may have happened to me before I finally turned up an hour later. Mimi misses a bus and phones to let me know that she'll be late because she's catching the next one and I am saved the worry.

I dont use mine that much but wouldn't be without it, feel much safer, hate seeing people using them when driving though, so much for the ban, see more people now than ever before!

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

There is no excuse for anyone using a mobile phone in a car, even hands free phones are a dangerous distraction. In my opinon any in car entertainment can be a contributing factor to accidents on these heavily congested roads,'sat navs' are another distraction, if one is embarking on a strange journey it only takes a little previous planning before hand. If its a must to use the mobile phone pull over when safe to do so.
