Question How Did We Manage Without It.

Just how did we manage without our mobile phones, of all the new gadgets to be invented it surely must rank as the most essential. Whilst in hospital the other week at Blackpool visitors were thin on the ground, so 'texting' was the only way to keep in touch. Contrary to what people would have you think ,you can use them in hospital, after all Blackpool Victoria is a heart /lung specialist unit, everyone had them you just didn't overdo it. I would not dream of leaving home without mine.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

Sorry , but I equate the cell phone to being the modern day equivalent of one of the Biblical plagues of Egypt .
Empirical proof is watching anyone in charge of either a motor vehicle or shopping trolley/cart and using a cell phone at the same time , an impossible task.
20/30 years from now when everyone is walking around with golf ball size cancerous tumours and suppurating pus oozing sores on their heads and asking why me ...........it's because you were daft enough to subject yourself to the same doses of radiation emitted by a microwave oven .
ok enough of my rant ..........

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

I'd hate to be without one for arranging meetings with people who aren't at home.

You could probably say the same for land lines a couple of generations ago. I remember when we got our first phone, a party line, I thought it was wonderful.

I'm one of those people who can't send text messages whilst walking let alone pushing a shopping trolley.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

Considering there convenience they are invaluable. If running late you can let the other half know you are on the way with the shopping. This will cost a couple of pence as opposed to the 40p starter in a public box (if one can be found). If it wasnt for the advances of technology we wouldnt be sitting in a wide area at our computers having this discussion.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

The thing is mobiles are no longer just phones. I find them invaluable as I'm often stuck in traffic on the way home. I do shopping for teh old dear next door and I can ring up when I'm there to find out what she needs(I might not have set out to go shopping so wouldn't have been able to ask beforehand)

But as well as a phone, mines

a) a radio
b) Sat nav
c) MP3 player (and video if I can be bothered to recode films) oh and the speaker is fine for background music e.g. on hols I have Siobhans bedtime music on it and play it for her to goto sleep and then we listen to music on th balcony
d) 3Megapixel digital camera
e) Internet machine (it has a decent full screen browser and 3G fast connection)
f) games machine ( I have ~30 games on it plus Mame(Arcade emulator))
g) bluetooth webcam for use with my laptop
h) full organiser
g) Office document reader(Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
h) a usb/bluetooth 'memory stick'
i) low res but useable video camera

I can even use it as a remote control.....

so not just a phone anymore,

Mobile phones I hate 'em, and yes I do have one, mainly if I'm out driving and need help.

Never mind I-D cards, they mean you can always be got, tracked or contacted.

Mines off most of the time.

On Christmas Eve Busman and I were having a peaceful snooze when his phone went off! It was Em (from 4 feet away) wishing all her contacts a Merry Christmas!!!!!

I know that feeling along with "oh hang on a minute I need to phone gran" which is done with a big cheesy grin, fluttering eyelids and a polite turn away. Wouldnt be so bad but its at least once an hour every hour. Then comes "dad can you top my phone up please" which this pilchard does.

Re: How Did We Manage Without It.

I didnt have a mobile phone until i managed to pass my driving test and bought a car, then my sister bought me one for my birthday (it was about 3 weeks later). Wouldnt be without it now. It was handy for when mum was here and the alarm people would ring my mobile. Very handy at 3am talking to 999 and trying to get mum calm and breathing properly again and ringing sisters & bro to come down. When i crashed the car i completely forgot all about the phone tho and started walking home. Everyone knows though if you want me to answer the phone ring my mobile!
