How organic!

How organic is organic?

I was in Asda today (for want of dog food and something better to do.) While perusing the fruit and veg section I wondered about the unlimited choice of different fruits and veggies on offer. I remember as a kid when fruit and veg were seasonal but now you can get anything you like, all year round. The dietry experts say that by the process of refridgeration and all the other processes it takes to bring our fruit and veg from abroad, vitamins and nutrients are lost. I then happened on some organic apples and wondered whether or not they are really better for you.....
The apples were from Italy so have probably undergone the same refridgeration as the other fruit therefore losing nutrients. Also I had to think about environmental factors. How many people round here have woken up to find a fine film of sand on their cars? Reputed to be Sahara sand, even if it isn't we aren't exactly close to the beaches round these parts so this sand must have travelled in the airstream from somewhere. People in Cumbria were reporting receiving fall out from Chernobyl which must again have travelled. Is it not then conceivable that our organic fruit and veg receive the same pesticides, radiation and other environmental toxins that our non-organic produce does, assuming that pesticide sprays will also travel in the airstream. If that is the case then in real terms these fruits/veggies are really no better for us and another consumer con..

Isn't it amazing how one's mind wanders in Asda? BTW, I forgot the dog food... and can anyone please tell me what a 'Sharon' fruit is??????

Re: How organic!

A sharon fruit is a lovely thing which looks like a strange yellow tomato and tastes delicious.

Your point about organic farming holds equally well regarding GM crops.

So poor old Tina is singing for her supper, to no avail, eh?
If she could talk, she would probably grass on you to the RSPCA.

If it's Sharon fruit you are interested in, take a look at it's self appointed official homepage: http://www.sharon-fruit.com/
Did you dip your toe in the water, and buy one? If so, what did it taste like?

Re: How organic!

I think they taste lovely. You have to be sure to wash/wipe the outside thoroughly though because you can't peel them. I prefer them when they are very ripe and juicy.

Re: How organic!

I may give them a try. They come in packs of 4 in our Asda so if I don't like them I'll make Sparky eat one and bring the rest round to your house Willow..

Re: How organic!

Is it worth the risk lettie?

Now I'm wondering how many other people are missing out on this delicious fruit. I only hope the first one you try isn't a grim one or it will put you off. Make sure it's nice and juicy, just a slight squishyness to it. If it's too firm it won't be as yummy. (I should get a job as PA to the sharon fruit! lol)
