Post Howard and Bulloughs of Accrington

Are you aware of the connection with the Bullough family of Accrington  (of Howard and Bullough fame) and Kinloch Castle, on the Isle of Rhum (Rum) in Scotland?  The firm became the largest manufacturer of ring spinning frames and weft frames in the world (hence the name of the building, "The Globe&quot - At its peak in the mid-1920's, almost 6,000 people were employed there.
The castle on the island is now in a poor state of repair and is featured on a new BBC2 programme to be shown 8th August and called "Restoration" -  apparently different homes are to be visited and it gives viewers the chance to rescue from ruin one of 30 significient buildings.
Watch out for it - it should be good.

It's a left over bit of coding oojimagjig from when the thingummy was changed. It would have been typed as just an ampersand (&) at the time.

If you look at the code for what I just wrote above it is:

I've been to Kinloch, the Bullough family's 'cottage' in the country. Historically it should be saved, as its a fantastic, over the top Victorian monstrosity of a castle. l know they weren't mill owners, but all l could think was of all the blood sweat & tears of Lancashire folk that made so much wealth for a lucky few.

Ahh, the joys of capitalism!

Also, Kinloch Castle is Edwardian not Victorian, there are distinct stylistic differences.

Thats more like it A-B! LOL. When l wrote it l thought Edwardian but wasn't quite sure. l must sat you are s**t hot! The last person who lived there was an aesthete who entertained Noel Coward, the Duke of Kent, et al 'and had debauched fancy dress parties which the servants said ended in orgies.[ l wasn't there.]

My karmas gone up! Thought l was going to end up in minus figures, Must try harder. Normally you could give me something from 1901, & l'd tell you if it was Victorian or Edwardian!

Re: Howard and Bulloughs of Accrington

Unlike we Hoi polloi, the moneyed classes and the aristocracy have a different slant on morality. Thus tales of hedonistic over indulgence at Kinloch come as no surprise. It is this difference in view point which is largely at the root of the Charles/Diana/Camilla row. The public do not understand that there are different standards of acceptable behaviour depending on where one happens to sit in the social hierarchy. This inability is commonly referred to as dumbing down or reducing the appreciation of everything to the lowest common denominator. Sadly, in the process, it robs the country of much that makes it unique.

Did anyone note the date of Atarah`s original posting ? As a relative newcomer I have been trawling the Site and came across this on P38 of General Chat. At the time no one had responded.

I think that you will find that a great many threads seem to get lost or pass with little comment. It is, I suppose, one of the drawbacks of having such an active board.

Re: Howard and Bulloughs of Accrington

Reading thrugh the old posts is interesting as a newbie. And if theres anything to add, a post could be re-ignited by a relevant comment, [unless it's from me!]
Don't really get the link between Charles/Camilla/Diana & Scottish hedonism? The menange a trois, are all aristocracy/ upper middle class, admitedly & have always lived by different standards, [Camilla's great Aunt Vilot Trefusis ran off with Vita Sackville West,] but behind every door, rich or poor there's always been secrets & intrigues.
