And this is exactly where I said it would all eventually lead despite our illustrious chief trying to pull wool over eyes with the notion that it will give the other towns more of an independant identity! They will totally completely 100% lose their identity and by the time that has happened it'll be too late to do anything about it.

Did anyone see the letter in today's Observer from John Farrer. I guess that puts paid to anyone's belief that a certain someone writes his letters for him ;D

Yes, saw this Gayle, was definitely mystified

Read it a few times as not so certain as to what he was trying to say?

Did say his "personal opinion was that a name change, for most people, would have no effect" (will effect all persons in terms of cost). The Observer picked up on this as a title 'Change has no effect' .. not quite the same.

He goes on to say that "there are valued arguments for and against, but who is right and who is wrong only time will tell" Will only be able to tell whether was correct if a name change takes place, and results show that doing so will have brought more economy into the borough. Hope you following this ?

He then proceeds to tell us that we could be placated by changing our addresses to e.g. Oswaldtwistle, Nr. Accrington, Lancs. This was always the case in the past, but now with the introduction of post codes not really necessary.

Maybe he is softening a little on this issue by sitting on both sides of the fence so as not to be seen as being on what will be the "losing side" .. i.e. no change to Accrington & District !!

Please tell me I am not being stupid here and misunderstanding this letter ..

John told me that he can see valid points on both sides of the argument. I can still only see valid points on the 'leave well alone' side personally.

I've only just got round to reading last week's Observer, and was suprised no one has commented on the fact Greg Pope wants to change the name of the constituency.

Apparently Hyndburn contains 7,000 voters in Haslingden, so he's applied to the Boundary Commission to change the name of the constituency to 'Hyndburn and Haslingden'. Which to me sounds a bit of a mouthful, and I fear people with false teeth may struggle.

Call me cynical, but I think those 7,000 people in Haslingden maybe being wooed.

All I hope is that it won't cost us a penny, and I pray to God it doesn't involve any new coat of arms.

Yeh, was tempted to mention myself on this thread (or separate) Garinda, just trying to work it all out in me head like. Feel you may be correct re. the wooing .. if their Hyndburn, their Bl**dy Hyndburn.. strange innit ?

Strange how Greg, I think in this thread, way back, said in theory he supported changing the borough name from Hyndburn to the more parochial sounding Accrington and Districts, yet didn't mention this constituency name change, when it was pointed out the name Hyndburn wouldn't disappear, because we'd still be represented at Westminster under the name.

Happily not heard much about this now, after the public outcry over the hidden costs.

This has been going on for years since the boundary commission changed the boundaries of his constituency. I should know - i was against it and spoke up against it at the hearing in Preston. Anyway Haslingden is not part of Hyndburn it is in Rossendale so whats wrong with being known as Hyndburn and Haslingden or even Haslingden and Hyndburn seeing as Haslingden (alphabetically anyway) comes before Hyndburn?

If the boundary wind changes again, those paltry 7,000 may find themselves back in Rossendale.

Theyve already done a boundary change which will come in at the next general election. In fact some people in Helmshore will be voting for greg next time around!!!

Voting I think is the key-word here, concerning this proposed name change.
