Re: I.D.Thieft

We shred everything with personal details on and we do put it in the paper sack but I've had a niggle at the back of my mind that I recall something being said that we're not supposed to. As I don't have a guinea pig and don't send many parcels what am I supposed to do with it? If I put it in the wheelie bin am I not committing the unforgiveable sin of committing to the landfil site something which is recyclable? Am I then at risk of being fined £1,000?

Cool Re: I.D.Thieft

Nope! I don’t have a shredder. But I have bank statements, utility bills and the like that go back some 40 years. All my other paper rubbish is bagged and once in a while, when the sack is full I do a small detour to our local Refuse Disposal Centre during a normal foray into the outside world and dump the contents into the waste paper skip. If a crook wants to wade through that pile, which in all probability will be wet and soggy, then go for it crook. I hope you catch something nasty. Tetanus would be a good possibility.

A very interesting programme but what really caught my attention is the ease that a wi fi computer can be snooped on. It’s bad enough every crook and his dog trying to infiltrate my computer but at least I can block most if not all attempts. I take stringent precautions with my passwords, by not using real words and certainly only using one password once. All my passwords are made up of random alpha-numeric characters of at least 10 characters in length and for the really important ones like bank, E-Gold etc never less than 15 characters and more usually 20. A 20 random alpha-numeric character password would have approximately 20,089,617,866,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 different combinations.

Re: I.D.Thieft

A few years ago I managed to lose some personal documents.. utility bills etc..a couple of weeks later I got a letter thanking me for opening a new online banking account with HSBC and could I log on to confirm my password and stuff !
the thing is... if anyone wants to steal my identity they are welcome to do so... I just hope they realise how much debt they are taking on !

Re: I.D.Thieft

When i had my most important letters nicked last year, worried about my income & bank, but when i rung the bank to assess the damage, seems that with me being on online banking as well as regular the ID they had & my a/c secure logins [that was net based but not with the important stuff] meant anyone trying to access my account would have to pass a stringent security check [to make sure its me] so thankfully saved the hassle of closing & re opening new account least my funds were safe!!

I now have security on some benefits too because they were at most risk at that time, which is passworded & sercurity coded now, as would seriously hate to imagine that in the wrong hands!! Luckily there are measures in place to limit the damage of ID theft, also there is insurance specifically for it now too.

Another threat just as dangerous, is discussing your business round a pub/club bar, familiarity is the ally of the house thief, talking about what you posses, when you are going on holiday when your house is empty, if you live on your own they already know where you are. In these days of mobile phones etc they can even relay information about where you are whilst they burgle your property, remember "a closed mouth catches no flies".

Cool Re: I.D.Thieft

My car/door keys are either in my pocket when I am dressed or under my pillow when I’m asleep. So any thief will have to get past me to get at them. Not difficult at my age I know but at least I will know if someone tries to steal them and I might be able to get the first blow in. Across the throat or jugular with the edge of an open hand would be a good place.

“But your honour - I just lashed out to try and protect myself. Surely I’m allowed to do that? I didn’t intend to crush his windpipe/jugular. Sorry!”

You are quite correct accymel, but next time you go in a pub or club, just as an exercise see how lax people are and how they like talking about what they have ,(even on here).

Cool Re: I.D.Thieft

Phishing phone calls seem to be on the increase these days not to mention the phishing knock on the door.

They know your name and phone number because more often than not it is in the ‘book’. Or you could get one that starts:
“Mr Jones?” when your name is something else.
Far too many people will answer no it’s …………and give their real name.

If anyone rings me and asks for me by name or the name of someone else I NEVER answer the question but ALWAYS come back with, “Who is speaking?” all polite and innocent like.

Then depending on who it is or how I feel at the time they get told to go away or …. Well you put your version in here.

Re: I.D.Thieft

I don't have a shredder!!! BUT I burn everything on my open fire. Now even that's dodgy, because if Mary poppin's wanted to steal my I.D she would have very easy access.

Might have to re-think this way of throwing my I.D away.
