Re: If you don't smoke please don't answer this.
The smoking ban applies to all enclosed PUBLIC spaces or rather it will do when it comes into force. Your home isn’t a public space Less – it is a private residence unless you turn it into one by allowing anyone in during normal hours without invitation.
So you can smoke away to your heart’s content without fear of the anti-smoking police knocking on your door. At least for now.
However it does raise the question of what if a tradesman calls to make a repair to some appliance or other or lay a carpet or decorate a room? What if the doctor or someone from Social Services or the Council calls? That effectively turns your home into a work place for those callers and work places come under the smoking ban. So strictly speaking not only will you not be able to smoke in your own house whilst the tradesman/woman is working but you must also ensure a smoke free atmosphere before s/he arrives.
How long will it be before some newly graduated university twit with a degree in some obscure subject gets a job with the local council and puts forward the idea that tenants of the council should not smoke in their own homes. This already happens in some privately rented accommodation. The prospective tenant must declare whether they smoke or not and if they do the landlord will not take them on as tenants.
Big Brother is closer than most people dare to imagine.
My only worry apart from how to spend what this government laughingly calls a pension is if I end up in an old folks home will I be banned from smoking because at 85 or whatever it will be bad for my health?

Not sure about that, because when the ban comes in any van or wagon used for business purposes will be included as a no smoking zone (even if it is used exclusively by the owner) and they aren't public places, so there just could be something in the small print somewhere waiting to surprise people.

Re: If you don't smoke please don't answer this.
Your home is a private residence until someone who is a non resident is in the house.
Its causing caos up here though as yet I havent heard of anyone getting find for having a fag in their own home. There is "advice available" for those who smoke as to when they are safe or not to do so in their own home. The council seem to be the biggest pushers for this but wonder how keen they would be if asked to pay for a smokers shelter for all smokers?
As for working from home then dont answer the door and smoke as you please.

Re: If you don't smoke please don't answer this.
Sorry SPUGGIE J but your home is always a private residence even when you invite a non-resident in.
It only becomes a public place when anyone can just walk in without your invitation. So technically a burglar could break in and tell you to put your fag out.
All WORK PLACES are deemed to be public places Less and that includes vehicles if they are used in pursuance of a job. Thus HGV drivers and white van man etc will be breaking the law if s/he lights up whilst in the vehicle.
How long before someone works out that a private residence where one spouse stays at home to do housewifey things is technically a work place for that spouse and thus smoking would be banned?

Re: If you don't smoke please don't answer this.
The answer is simple! You designate one room in your home as The Office. As this is a place of work you can't smoke in there but you can nip into the garden if it's a nice sunny day or into the sitting room or the loo when it's not. When the Sphinctre Police call round you can then tell them you are operating a non-smoking working environment, in accordance with the Law, and the rest of the house is your private dwelling place so they can s*d off.

Yes it is a simple answer, but you can bet they will have a horrible complicated reason why that can't apply!

Don't worry Less, I'm sure they'll introduce smoking dens in a bit where people can congregate to puff at their hearts content without fear of anyone complaining.

Yet another post that has gone straight to the gods!
There should be one from me somewhere in between Grannies and willows!
And it was so good I would probably have won a prize for it!
