Re: Its time to draw the line

I think the blame is ours in a lot of situations because we dont look after our own interests strongly enough not just on the european scene but also in world affairs,we worry to much about losing for want of a better phrase"face" when we should be saying if you dont like it tough!

Spot on. Take retirement age for instance.

Re: Its time to draw the line

There's only one British politician who had the bottle to stand up to the EU and I'm no great admirer of hers (although I know Cashy holds her in specially high regard ) and that's Margaret Thatcher. She won our rebate by the simple expedient of threatening to withold our contribution - no other British politician has had the resolve to do that. Of course, the grovelling, supine Blair gave a large part of it away later.

Unfortunately, our political class don't have the guts to take the laissez faire attitude that other nations do, so we're better off out.

Re: Its time to draw the line

Wynn makes a valid point, no matter your leanings you have to give Maggie that, she stood for Britain in that respect. Since then we've only had mediocre Politicians who weren't & aren't prepared to stand up for UK & make waves about the increasing way our lives are governed from outside our shores.

That might not go down to well with the Tory voting farmers who employed these children to pick thier crops... the same farmers who recieve massive handouts from the EU.

Re: Its time to draw the line

But back to the article, it has only caused such a furore as it has happened here in the UK, they would no doubt have done the same or similar in their own Country but for a lot less. So why the outcry ? Who is bringing this to the attention of the wider public & for what purpose ?

Those really are the questions that answers need to be sought for, the who & why !

Smoking ban is one thing I wouldn't blame the EU for, because it's nothing to do with EU law. It was introduced here by the British government, so it's irrelevant to this argument. Will be very interested to see how closely the Spanish enforce it though. My guess is not very thoroughly!

I would doubt that very much, probably a case of making the right noises.
