Re: Jobs
I have no idea.
It all seems very arbitrary.
Why the government are planning to bail out this Indian owned company, and not others, which are facing equal hardships, is very strange.
Sadly I think it should be sink or swim, as there isn't a never ending pot of money to help every business weather the recession, a recession we don't know the length of.

Re: Jobs
Well, to my mind if they're helping one they have to help them all, but where is it all going to end, we're already in hock up to our eyeballs, when will enough be enough

It is pointless helping company`s that are more than likely predicted to be in the same position in the near future when we are expected to be out of a recession. That would be just throwing good money after bad but if there is a good possibility of saving a company I beleive if viable the goverment should always help but be paid back later and save jobs

Re: Jobs
Not too sure if our Armed forces use Jag equipment, but the government are changing their official cars from Jag to BMW.
Don't forget that Jaguar and Land Rover have not been British owned for many years, first by BMW, a German company and now by a Indian firm called Tata, who have so much cash they can afford to splash some on the Ferrari F1 team next year.
Britain does not have much of a British owned motor industry anymore I can only think of Caterham, Noble, Morgan, Bristol and Ariel, there are doubtless others, but all the other great Marques, Aston, Rolls, Bentley, Jaguar are either foreign owned or defunct such as TVR.

Re: Jobs
It doesnt say they wont bail them out, more that they have to look to their own resources first, and then pass some stringent tests before the government will consider helping them financially. I have argued this point before, they bailed out the banks, for example, if my business were struggling they wouldnt consider bailing us out, moreover, the government body created to issue grants for heating has made the tender criteria very difficult for small businesses, so the non profit making body created by the government (eaga) has its own businesses who carry out most of the grantwork (warmfront and heat being 2 of them), and small businesses cant get a look in, while the companies owned by eaga make millions, non of which is returned to the government (except taxes) even though eaga is government owned, makes me wonder how many mp's pockets are being lined by this fiasco. And how many other 'grants' etc are being abused in the same way, all to the detrement of genuine businesses. Woolies imo are their own worst enemy, along with wh smith and others who did not move with the times and demands of the public, and the pressure applied by asda and tesco.
