Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
well Cashy, I felt it needed saying. He was such a kind man.
She had a temper to match her hair colour. I saw her give an airport worker at Manchester a right tongue lashing.......a 'don't you know who I am?' kind of tongue lashing.
She went down in my estimation after that......and never came up again.

The way I read it in the Observer was that re- naming the bowling green in Rhyddings Park after him was considered by Ken to be an honour

At a couple of meetings I was at recently it was explained that when asked if he would like something naming after him, Ken suggested the bowling green in Rhyddings Park.

I think you'll find cashy that Ken was actually asked about it whilst in hospital and naming the bowling green was his choice, but I agree to me renaming Union Road would be a very fitting tribute to Ken, but he was never one for courting the limelight, he was a slip away quietly while no one was looking chap never wanting any attention, in fact I think David Amis summed it up very well during the service when he said Ken would have said E EK all these folk turning up for me, that was Ken

I can quite see that Ken was a man who sought no limelight for himself, but it would be good to have something in Accrington named after him too...after all he was our MP.

I too remember Ken RIP.
Funnily enough Margaret, your comment a 'don't know who I am' was officially stated to be offensive here in Italy and anyone using it in a discussion is liable to prosecution!!!

It was a long time ago....we were waiting to get on a shuttle flight down to Heathrow Airport(probably 1980).....Barbara Castle flounced in (in her red full length fox fur coat) walked straight up to the check in desk and was being a pain in the proverbial to the check in girl......she gave her a right tongue lashing and finished with those words 'Don't you know who I am?'

Hopefully, the check in girl was used to dealing with stroppy old bags, and treated her with the contempt she deserved!

No, she got a bit flustered and a supervisor was called to deal with the bad tempered harridan

Ya when she came to Blackburn her husband used to park the Rolls Royce in a pub car park in Chorley along with the fur coat in the boot, then on with the old raincoat and scarf and into an old banger for the rest of the journey

Re: Kenneth Hargreaves MBE RIP
It's a pity the girl at Heathrow didn't deal with her like they do in Denver.
This is the perfect way to deal with unpleasant "Do you know who I am?" type of customers.
Do You Know Who I Am?
An award should go to the United Airlines gate agent in Denver for being smart and funny, and making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo.
During the final days at Denver's old Stapleton airport, a crowded United flight was canceled.
A single agent was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travelers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, "I HAVE to be on this flight and it has to be FIRST CLASS."
The agent replied, "I'm sorry sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these folks first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out."
The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, "Do you have any idea who I am?"
Without hesitating, the gate agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone.
"May I have your attention please?" she began, her voice bellowing throughout the terminal. "We have a passenger here at the gate WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to gate 17."
With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the United agent, gritted his teeth and swore "(Expletive) you."
Without flinching, she smiled and said, "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to stand in line for that, too."
The man retreated as the people in the terminal applauded loudly. Although the flight was canceled and people were late, they were no longer angry at United.

Agreed.
Nice idea, seeing as for years he lived facing the park, but no one's ever going to use the name.
When there used to be two, everyone referred to them as the 'top' or 'bottom bowling green'. Now it's just the 'bowling green', and no one will ever actually use it's new 'Ken Hargreaves memorial bowling green' name. Although they will, when talking about the trophy which apparently is going to be presented in his honour, which is a better idea.
I think the idea of naming something after him in the constituency, which actually has a postal address, would be a much more fitting memorial.

I think it could only be, as cashy suggested, Eastgate, I think I'm right in saying there are no residences on there so it wouldn't cause any problems with address changes, Ken would have hated that

Maybe we could just accept what Ken wanted and leave it at that. When I first heard about this I thought it was a lovely idea, made special because it is what he wanted.
